Protesters at the University of Texas at Dallas set up camp on campus Wednesday morning, joining nationwide demonstrations against the war in Gaza.
According to a press release, the camp was organized by the Palestinian Youth Movement. Like other campus protests across the country, the group is demanding that UTD divest from companies that do business with the Israeli military. Among other things, they also want the university to call for a ceasefire in Gaza.
One of the students involved told J.D. CBS News Texas' Miles said the university threatened to call in state police to expel protesters and arrest those who refused to disperse.
After protests at UT Austin earlier this week resulted in numerous arrests, the university said in a statement that it will not tolerate "any attempt to shut down or disrupt university operations."
"Nothing is more important than the safety of our students, and we will once again not hesitate to utilize all of our resources to protect our students and keep UT's campus open." Kevin P. Organizers of student protests at the University of Texas at Dallas will be allowed to protest peacefully, but will not be allowed to set up encampments or structures or attempt to do so. The university said law enforcement broke up the camp "due to individuals not complying."

"Individuals may peacefully assemble in outdoor public areas of campus to exercise their right to freedom of expression, but may not set up encampments or block access," the school said in a statement. ”.

Twenty-one people were arrested at an encampment in Dallas, Utah and will be held overnight in the Collin County Jail. Pro-Palestinian lawyers say the judge has refused to meet with them until Thursday morning.
Most of those arrested are students and some faculty members are facing misdemeanor charges. Lawyers said they spoke to 15 of the 21 people.
