Narendra Modi government formation: Nitish gives jaldi kariye advice at NDA meeting

Despite INDIA bloc's overtures to key politicians, the National Democratic Alliance on Wednesday extended its support to Narendra Modi. The NDA partners adopted a three-paragraph resolution in Hindi saying they elect the BJP stalwart as “our leader”. The Varanasi MP will likely take oath of office for his third term as the Prime Minister of India on June 8. The Opposition's alliance, which also huddled up in the national capital yesterday, in an ominous warning, said it will take appropriate steps at the appropriate time to "realise the people's desire not to be ruled by the BJP government".

In the NDA meeting, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, who has emerged as the proverbial kingmaker after the Lok Sabha elections, reportedly coaxed Narendra Modi to act fast on the formation of his third government.

Nitish Kumar, whose JD(U) won 12 Lok Sabha seats in Bihar, reportedly told Modi that there shouldn't be any delay in the formation of the government. "We should do it as soon as possible," he said, as per sources.

"Jaldi kijiye," Kumar reportedly told Narendra Modi.

The meeting took place in a cordial environment. NDA members hailed Modi's leadership. The vexed topic of ministerial berth didn't come up, a source told.

“There was no discussion on the Cabinet formation, no negotiations. Nitish Kumar said since the election was long and spread over seven phases, the process of government formation should be expedited,” said a member privy to the details.

Netanyahu says Israel ‘prepared for very intense operation’ near Lebanon

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel is “prepared for a very intense operation” along its border with Lebanon, where Israeli troops have exchanged near daily fire with Hezbollah fighters for almost eight months.

The fighting between Israel and the Lebanese armed group, a Hamas ally, has intensified over the past week, with Israel striking deeper into Lebanese territory, raising concerns that an even wider conflict could break out between the heavily armed adversaries.

“We are prepared for a very intense operation in the north. One way or another, we will restore security to the north,” Netanyahu said during a visit to the border area.

Hezbollah said later that it launched several attacks on Israeli positions during the day, including a “guided missile” strike on an “Iron Dome platform in the Ramot Naftali barracks”. Iron Dome is Israel’s air defence system.

Israeli media outlets reported that a Hezbollah drone attack on the northern town of Hurfeish on Wednesday injured at least 10 people, one critically.

In past weeks, Israel has ramped up its targeting of Hezbollah members and allied Palestinian and Lebanese fighters in cars and on motorbikes in Lebanon.

National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, Netanyahu’s far-right coalition partners,  have both called in recent days for immediate action.   “They burn us here, all Hezbollah strongholds should also burn and be destroyed. WAR!” Ben Gvir said on Tuesday in a Telegram post.

Smotrich said on Monday: “We must move the security strip from inside Israeli territory in the Galilee to southern Lebanon, including a ground invasion, occupation of the territory and distancing Hezbollah terrorists and hundreds of thousands of Lebanese among whom Hezbollah hides to the other side of the Litani River,” nearly 30km (20 miles) north of the border.

Israeli Chief of the General Staff Herzi Halevi said on Tuesday that the army was ready to move to an offensive in the north.

“We are prepared after a very good process of training up to the level of a General Staff exercise to move to an offensive in the north,” he said in a recorded statement. “We are approaching a decision point.”

‘Many actors are no longer rational’

Israeli air strikes have pounded areas in southern Lebanon and struck the Bekaa Valley near the Syrian border.

The Israeli attacks have killed about 300 members of Hezbollah since October 7 and about 80 civilians. Strikes from Lebanon on Israel have killed 18 Israeli soldiers and 10 civilians, the Israeli military said.

Lebanese army says gunman attacked US embassy

Lebanese army on Wednesday said that a gunman attempted to attack the U.S. embassy near Beirut. According to the Lebanese military, the attacker was shot dead and was a Syrian national

The Lebanese army said Wednesday a gunman attempted to attack on the U.S. embassy near Beirut.  The Lebanese military in a statement said that soldiers shot an assailant, who they only described as a Syrian national. The gunman was wounded and taken to a hospital.

Local media reported that there was a gunfight for almost half an hour by the U.S. diplomatic mission in the suburb of Aukar, north of Beirut.

The U.S. Embassy said the morning attack by the embassy’s entrance did not cause any casualties among their staff, and that Lebanese troops and embassy security mobilized quickly.

The Lebanese military said it deployed troops around the embassy and surrounding areas.

In 1983, a deadly bombing attack on the U.S. Embassy in Beirut killed 63 people.. U.S. officials blame the attack on the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.  Following that attack, the embassy was moved from central Beirut to the Christian suburb of Aukar, north of the capital. Another bomb attack struck the new location on Sept. 20, 1984.

In September 2023, Lebanese security forces detained a Lebanese man who opened fire by the U.S. Embassy. There were no casualties in that attack.

In October 2023, hundreds of protesters clashed with Lebanese security forces in demonstrations near the U.S. Embassy in support of Gaza’s people and the militant group Hamas in its war with Israel.

Devendra Fadnavis offers to resign as deputy CM

Maharashtra Deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has expressed the desire to be free from government as he wants to do BJP organisation work.  Maharashtra's deputy chief minister and senior BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis is set to request the BJP leadership to relieve him of his deputy CM responsibilities. This move comes in the wake of the party's disappointing performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections, where the BJP's tally in Maharashtra dropped drastically from 23 seats in 2019 to just nine this year.

Fadnavis, who has been a key figure in the state's BJP leadership, took full responsibility for the party's electoral setback.   “I want to work at the organisational level to improve the performance of the party in the ensuing Assembly elections. I want to devote my full time to strengthening the organisation. I am going to request my central leadership to free me from the responsibility of the post in the state government,” Fadnavis told a press conference after a review meeting on Lok Sabha results.
The meeting, convened a day after the election results were announced, was attended by top BJP leaders, including state unit chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule. The primary agenda was to analyse the party's performance and discuss future strategies. Despite the BJP and its allies securing 17 of the 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra, the results were seen as a significant decline compared to the 2019 elections.

In the previous Lok Sabha polls, the BJP had won 23 seats in Maharashtra. This time, however, the party's performance was overshadowed by the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), comprising Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar). The MVA collectively won 30 seats, marking a substantial gain for the alliance. Congress saw a remarkable increase, winning 13 seats compared to just one in 2019. Shiv Sena (UBT) secured nine seats, while NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) secured eight.

Fadnavis was sworn in as the deputy chief minister in the Eknath Shinde-led government on June 30, 2022.
