Narendra Modi swearing-in ceremony: Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will leave Dhaka for Delhi at 11 am today.

Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi will take oath of office in the capital on Sunday in the presence of a host of foreign dignitaries, including leaders of neighbouring countries. He is scheduled to meet these foreign leaders the next day.

Maldives President Mohamed Muiz, whose apparent bias towards China has strained ties with India, is also likely to attend the big event. Muiz along with several Maldivian government officials are likely to leave for the ceremony in New Delhi on Saturday.

Neighbouring countries invited to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's swearing-in ceremony include leaders of Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal, Mauritius and Seychelles.

Among them, Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Nepali Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda have also confirmed their attendance.

Dahal and Ranil Wickremesinghe will arrive in Delhi on June 9. Hasina is likely to fly to Delhi today.

Dahal and Modi spoke over the phone and confirmed his participation, ANI reported. "As the date of the swearing-in ceremony has been rescheduled, Sheikh Hasina will leave Dhaka for Delhi at 11 am on Saturday, June 8, after attending the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and will return at noon on June 10," said Bangladesh PM's speechwriter M. Nazrul Islam.

New Delhi invited these politicians as part of India's Neighbourhood First policy.

Muiz's visit to India could be a key step in easing tensions between the two traditional partners. One of Muiz's predecessors, Abdullah Yameen, attended Modi's swearing-in ceremony in May 2014.

Relations between India and the Maldives have deteriorated since Muizz came to power in November 2023. He has called on India to withdraw its military personnel from the country. He was on the "Quit India" list during the elections.

Donald Trump’s hush money conviction now means he faces potential travel ban from some nations

President Donald Trump now faces a new challenge of travel restrictions and a significantly reduced list of countries he can visit.

Donald Trump, the first former US president to be convicted of a serious crime, now faces a new challenge of travel restrictions and a significantly reduced list of countries he can visit.

A Manhattan jury found Trump guilty of all charges in his hush-money trial last week. He was charged with 34 first-degree misdemeanor counts of falsifying internal company documents in connection with his involvement in a $130,000 hush-money payment to buy porn actress Stormy Daniels' silence about her alleged sexual relationship.

Trump faces three additional charges, but it remains unclear whether those cases will be resolved before the November election.

The former president's sentencing is scheduled for Tuesday, July 11. The outcome could determine whether he will be allowed to leave the United States and enter other countries as a convicted felon. Will Trump be banned from entering other countries?

Nearly 37 countries, including Canada, China, Israel, and the UK, have regulations that prohibit serious criminals from crossing their borders. However, not all countries routinely check passengers' criminal records.

President Trump has indicated his intention to appeal the sentence. However, that can only be done after the sentence is handed down. Even if he appeals, the jury's decision will stand and Trump will be considered a convicted felon.

The decision will be important if Trump is reelected to the White House, making it virtually impossible for him to travel abroad.

Under U.S. law, there are no travel restrictions for convicted felons unless there is a court order.

In an interview with Axios, defense lawyer Keith B. Johnson said it was unlikely that Trump's travel would be "limited to the United States based on a New York State court ruling." "This is a financial crime, what we consider an economic crime, not a violent crime," he continued.

Johnson said Trump is such a well-known figure that other countries would likely make exceptions if the Republican leader is re-elected.

Johnson said the fact that Trump is a convicted felon will continue to matter to him as a person. He also stressed that Trump will be visiting China as the president of the United States, not as a private citizen.

Three labourers held for trying to enter Parliament using forged documents

Three men, who were working as construction workers at Parliament House, were arrested for allegedly trying to enter the complex using forged Aadhar Cards on Tuesday afternoon, the day counting of votes for Lok Sabha elections, police said.

Police said a case of impersonation, forgery and criminal conspiracy was registered against the trio at the Parliament police station. Investigators are trying to ascertain if the trio committed the crime as part of a conspiracy and whether more people were involved in it, said police.

According to the police, the labourers were working at the Parliament building complex for the past three months. Two of them had Aadhar Cards having similar Aadhar numbers but different photos.

As per the first information report (FIR) registered on the complaint of Central Industrial Security Force inspector Balmukund Thakur, around 1.30 pm on Tuesday, an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) detected three workers, identified by their single names Kasim, Monis, and Soyab, trying to get entry through iron gate number 3 of Parliament House using a casual entry pass. The security officials, however, found it to be forged.

The trio were then handed over to the police with a complaint, and a probe was launched to ascertain a criminal conspiracy angle.

“During the enquiry, it was found that Kasim was impersonating Monis and possessing an Aadhar Card on which he had used his original photograph while the Aadhar Card possessed by Monis had his name and photograph, but its serial numbers were the same as those used by Kasim. The addresses on the Aadhar Card were identical. Soyab’s Aadhar Card had a residential address that was similar to that of Kasim’s residential address”, said a police officer citing the contents of the FIR.

“All three workers were hired by contractor Sahnawaj Alam. It seems either one or both Aadhar Cards, which belonged to Kasim and Monis, were forged”, the officer said, quoting the FIR, and added that all the arrested workers were from Uttar Pradesh.

Israeli strike kills at least 40 Palestinians at school in Central Gaza

Israeli strike kills at least 40 Palestinians at school in Central Gaza

Israel said Thursday it had bombed a school in the Gaza Strip, killing a Hamas militant inside. Hamas officials said 40 people were killed, including women and children, as they sought refuge in a UN compound.

The attack comes at a delicate time for a brokered ceasefire aimed at freeing hostages kidnapped by Hamas on October 7 and some Palestinians held in Israeli prisons. Hamas is seeking a permanent end to the war.

Israel insists the Islamist group must be eliminated first.

With both sides giving conflicting explanations for the attack on the school, the United States issued a joint statement with other countries on Thursday, calling on Israel and Hamas to make the compromises necessary to reach an agreement.

Ismail al-Tawabuta, head of the Hamas-run state press office, denied Israeli allegations that a Hamas command post was hidden in the United Nations school in Nuseirat, central Gaza.

"The occupation forces are using a fabricated and false story... to justify the brutal crimes they committed against dozens of displaced people," Tawabuta told Reuters.

The Israeli army said its warplanes had carried out a "precise strike" and distributed satellite photos showing two parts of a building where militants are said to be stationed.

"We have great confidence in the intelligence," said army spokesman Lt. Col. Speaking to reporters, Peter Lerner accused Hamas and Islamic Jihadists of deliberately using UN facilities as operational bases.
Also read: Israeli forces attack "Hamas compound" at school; media reports put death toll at 39, death toll at 4,444 He said there were between 20 and 30 militants in the compound, many of whom were killed, but did not give specific details as intelligence analysis is still being carried out. "There have been no civilian casualties. We are very cautious about believing anything revealed by Hamas," he said.

Schools run by the UN Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) may have been attacked several times, said the agency's communications director Juliet Touma.

She said she could not confirm the death toll at this time.

Media in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip had previously put the casualty figure at 35 to 40.

Tawabuta and medical sources said 40 people were killed, including 14 children and nine women.

Efforts towards a ceasefire

Israel said on Wednesday it would launch a new military operation in central Gaza to fight militants who have resorted to hit-and-run tactics. Israel says ceasefire talks have intensified since U.S. President Joe Biden put forward a proposal on Friday but fighting will not stop in the meantime.
All attempts to broker a ceasefire have failed since a week-long ceasefire in November, with both sides blaming the other.

"At this critical moment, we call on Israeli and Hamas leaders to make the final compromises necessary to complete this agreement," the White House statement said, along with Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Britain, Canada and others.

CIA Director William Burns met Wednesday in Doha with senior officials from mediators Qatar and Egypt to discuss the proposed ceasefire. Two Egyptian security officials said the talks continued on Thursday but showed no signs of a breakthrough.

Biden has repeatedly said in recent months that a ceasefire is near, but it never materialized.

Last week's high-profile announcement coincided with intense domestic pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to find a way to end the eight-month war and negotiate the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas.
Hamas, which controls Gaza, began the war on October 7 with an attack on Israeli territory. According to Israeli figures, about 1,200 people have been killed and more than 250 hostages taken.

About half of the hostages were released during a ceasefire in November.

Health officials say Israel's military offensive on Gaza has killed more than 36,000 people in the region and thousands more are feared buried under rubble.

With about half of Hamas' forces wiped out in eight months of fighting, the group is resorting to insurgent tactics to thwart Israeli attempts to seize control of Gaza, U.S. and Israeli officials told Reuters.

According to three US officials familiar with battlefield developments, the number of Hamas fighters has dropped to between 9,000 and 12,000. Before the conflict, the Americans estimated it at 20,000 to 25,000. Israel has said it has lost about 300 soldiers in the Gaza conflict.

Hamas has not released numbers of its fighters killed, and some officials have argued that Israeli figures for Hamas fighter deaths are exaggerated.

Meanwhile, the conflict between Israel and Lebanon-based Hezbollah is threatening to escalate, with the US State Department warning of an all-out war.

Biden said the ceasefire proposal was an Israeli one, but it has received a lukewarm response from the Israeli public.

A senior adviser to Netanyahu acknowledged Sunday that Israel made the proposal even though it was "not a good deal."

Far-right lawmakers in Netanyahu's government have said they would resign if he agrees to a peace deal that keeps Hamas in power, a move that could force new elections and end the political career of Israel's longest-serving leader.

Centrist opponents who joined Netanyahu's war cabinet as a show of solidarity at the start of the civil war have also threatened to resign, saying Netanyahu has no plan.

India has significant investment opportunities totalling over $500 billion by 2030, especially in the clean energy value chain including renewable energy, green hydrogen, electric vehicles and infrastructure transformation, said Minister Sunil Bhartwal. He was speaking at the first Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) Clean Economy Investor Forum in Singapore.

Fair and Clean Economy

During the IPEF forum, 13 IPEF member countries signed the Agreement on Fair and Clean Economy, while India will sign the agreement after getting national approval.

India has not signed these agreements as the national approval process is still ongoing, but it will be completed after the formation of the new government, the Commerce Ministry said in a statement. The agreements were negotiated in November last year and signed at a ministerial meeting in Singapore in the presence of trade ministers and senior officials of the 14 member countries. The Indian delegation was led by Bhalswal.

The IPEF bloc was launched in Tokyo on May 23, 2022, in collaboration with the United States and other partners in the Indo-Pacific region. Together, they account for 40% of global economic output and 28% of trade.

Four-Pillar Framework

The framework is built around four pillars: trade, supply chains, clean economy, and fair economy. India has joined all pillars except trade. The bloc comprises Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, United States and Vietnam.

The Indian delegation highlighted the key reforms introduced over the last decade to improve the ease of doing business in India.

In the sustainable infrastructure category, four Indian companies were shortlisted after a selection process to pitch their concepts to investors from around the world.

Rahul Gandhi to appear in Bengaluru court today

Rahul Gandhi to appear in Bengaluru court today. All you need to know about the '40% Sarkara' defamation case

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is set to appear in a special court in Bengaluru on Friday in connection with a defamation suit filed by the BJP in Karnataka over an alleged election spree ahead of last year's general elections, which allegedly featured defamatory advertisements in major newspapers. The complaint accused the then Bharatiya Janata Party government of large-scale corruption during its rule from 2019 to 2023. On Thursday, the state Congress had said, "National Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will appear in a civil court in the city tomorrow (Friday) at 10.30 am for a hearing."

What is the defamation case about?

On June 1, a Bengaluru court granted bail to Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar, who appeared in the case. Justice KN Shivakumar passed the order and fixed Rahul Gandhi's grooming on June 7.

During the hearing last week, Gandhi's lawyers filed a petition to exempt their client from appearing in court, which was contested by the plaintiffs. They opposed granting repeated exemptions.

In June 2023, the Bharatiya Janata Party filed a complaint alleging that the defendants made false and irresponsible allegations in an advertisement published in various newspapers in Karnataka on May 5, 2023, during the general election period. The advertisement, titled "Corrupt Tariff Card", accused the government of taking "40% commission sarkara (government)".

The complaint alleges that the advertisement was circulated by the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) through its president Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah, former Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly. The BJP emphasised that Rahul Gandhi had shared these "defamatory advertisements" on his account on social media platform X.

BJP-led NDA meeting today, Chandrababu Babu asks all TDP MPs to attend it

Days after the Lok Sabha election results, newly elected MPs of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance or NDA will likely meet in New Delhi on Friday, June 7, to elect Narendra Modi as their leader. TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu reportedly directed all party MPs to attend NDA's meeting in New Delhi.

After being elected as the NDA's leader,Narendra Modi will take the oath of office for his third term as prime minister at a swearing-in ceremony likely to be held on Sunday, June 9.

BJP-led NDA meeting in New Delhi

  1. Naidu on Thursday and is set to take part in the NDA meeting. News agency PTI, citing TDP sources, reported that Chandrababu Naidu is expected to be in New Delhi until June 9 for Narendra Modi's swearing-in ceremony.
  2. After Narendra Modi's election as the leader of NDA MPs, senior members of the alliance such as Chandrababu Naidu and Nitish Kumar of the Janata Dal (United) will likely to join the prime minister for a meeting with President Droupadi Murmu to present her the list of parliamentarians supporting him.
  3. Modi may be sworn in over the weekend, possibly Sunday, PTI reported. The NDA has 293 MPs, comfortably above the majority mark of 272 in the 543-member Lok Sabha.
  4. TDP, which has emerged as 'kingmaker' in the NDA government formation at the Centre with with 16 MPs, is likely to join the Union cabinet, a party spokesperson told PTI on Thursday.
  5. The TDP will also seek special status for revenue-starved Andhra Pradesh, which lost IT behemoth Hyderabad to Telangana during the state’s bifurcation in 2014.
  6. This is not the first time that the TDP has been in government with the NDA at the centre. Late TDP leader GMC Balayogi was the Speaker of the Lok Sabha when Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the prime minister. However, he died in a chopper crash in Andhra Pradesh in 2002.
  7. According to Shiv Sena sources, instead of his son and three-term MP Shrikant Shinde, Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde wants other senior MPs to be considered for ministerial roles.
  8. Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, who will meet his party’s 12 parliamentarians in Delhi on Friday morning, is likely to demand four ministerial berths and special status for the state where the NDA won 30 out of the 40 Lok Sabha seats on offer.
  9. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, senior JD(U) leader and Bihar minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary said, “The JD(U) is part of the NDA and will remain with it. But, there are certain demands of the JD(U) related to the financial condition and economy of Bihar that must be fulfilled by the Centre. Our demand for special category status for Bihar is fully justified and needs to be fulfilled. We stick to our demand for SCS for Bihar.”
  10. Preparing to take oath for a third straight term as the head of a coalition government, Modi on June 5 chaired a meeting of the ruling alliance's members who unanimously elected him as its leader.
