Mirage 2000: France sends heroes of "ground attack" to Ukraine

French President Emmanuel Macron outlined plans to deliver Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets to Ukraine and train Ukrainian pilots in France. With the June 6 announcement, the Mirage 2000-5 will be the second Western fighter jet to enter the Ukrainian Air Force after the F-16.
"Tomorrow we are starting a new cooperation and announcing the delivery of Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets from French manufacturer Dassault to Ukraine and training Ukrainian pilots in France," Macron said in an interview on French television.
The statement came after the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Allied landings at Normandy during World War II.
President Macron said pilot training would begin this summer. "It usually takes five to six months. The pilots will be trained in France by the end of the year," he added, without giving the exact number of fighter jets to be delivered.
Macron noted that Ukraine needs to mobilize tens of thousands more soldiers to the front and faces "huge challenges" in training its soldiers, stressing the urgent need for qualified personnel. France will also equip and train a full brigade of 4,500 Ukrainian soldiers to ensure their defense upon their return to Ukraine.
The development is welcome news for Kyiv, which is actively seeking the latest fighter jets from its allies. The move follows a recent announcement that the Ukrainian Air Force will receive Saab 340 airborne early warning and control aircraft from Sweden.
Sweden is considering supplying Gripen fighter jets to Ukraine. However, other European countries have reportedly asked Sweden to suspend potential deliveries of F-16 fighter jets and focus instead.
Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands and Belgium are set to supply Kiev with more than 60 US-made F-16 jets. The international joint effort is aimed at strengthening Ukraine's defense capabilities as the conflict continues.
The Mirage 2000-5 is equipped with RDY radars, a mechanically scanned pulse-Doppler system with look-down/shoot-down capability. These radars offer significantly improved capabilities to track multiple targets simultaneously compared to the older RDI (Radar Doppler à Impulsions, an X-band pulse-Doppler radar with high pulse repetition rate) and RDM (Radar Doppler Multifunction, a multimode pulse-Doppler radar), and improved air-to-ground capabilities.
Such capabilities will be particularly beneficial for Ukraine, which is constantly under threat from low-flying Russian cruise missiles and kamikaze drones. The Mirage 2000-5 may also be equipped with advanced weapons such as the MICA beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile.
Although the Mirage 2000-5 is primarily optimized for air-to-air combat, it may also be adapted to use air-to-ground weapons already supplied by France to Ukraine. These include the SCALP-EG cruise missile and the Hummer rocket-assisted precision bomb.
Previously, it was suggested that France would deliver the older 2000C models, which will be phased out in 2022. Earlier this year, Ukrainian Air Force Commander General Mykola Oleschuk made a specific request for Mirage 2000D aircraft.
Therefore, it cannot be excluded that France may supply Ukraine with Mirage 2000C or Mirage 2000D aircraft in the future.
The Mirage fighter continues to demonstrate its relevance in modern warfare. The aircraft has a colorful history, having been deployed during major conflicts such as the Gulf War, providing high-altitude air defense for the US Air Force's U-2 reconnaissance aircraft. In addition, the Mirage 2000 supported NATO forces during the Bosnian and Kosovo wars.
The Mirage 2000 was widely accepted in the international market. Countries such as India, the United Arab Emirates, Taiwan, Greece, Egypt, Brazil, Qatar and Peru purchased the aircraft.
India in particular used the Mirage 2000 extensively in various conflicts. During the Kargil conflict in 1999, the Indian Air Force's Mirage 2000 played a key role in fighting enemy forces entrenched in mountainous terrain. They contributed to the Tiger Hill and Munso Daro operations.
In February 2019, India overlooked Su-30 MKIs during the Balakot airstrikes in response to the Pulwama attack, deploying a fleet of Mirage 2000s equipped with Spice bombs, demonstrating the aircraft's precision targeting capabilities.
In 2022, the Indian Air Force used the Mirage 2000 multirole fighter jet to carry out precision ground strikes with laser-guided bombs to flush out Pakistani soldiers who had infiltrated Indian territory. IAF officials publicly acknowledged their involvement in clearing Pakistani terrorists from Indian posts in Gurez Machar sector of Jammu and Kashmir.
For Operation Kargil-II, the IAF deployed four Mirage 2000 jets to launch "precision ground strikes" with laser-guided bombs to hit Pakistani soldiers. The TOI report claims that by the time the Pakistani intruders realized, they had already occupied a strategic hill overlooking the Neelum Valley.
We did what we had to do. The Army had asked us for assistance and we did the needful," the official said in response to a question on the Kargil-II incident. According to IAF officials, Pakistan has concentrated almost its entire air force of 200 frontline fighters in the northern sector bordering Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir.
During this period, the Pakistani high command has activated 15 satellite bases in addition to six "main" air bases and increased its fighter strength compared to 12-16 squadrons in the IAF's Western Air Command. "But if orders were given, we were ready to overpower them."

Israel Bombards Gaza refugee camp as war enters 9th month
UNRWA said hundreds of displaced people sought refuge in the Nuseirat school, which was attacked on Thursday, but the school was hit "without warning." On Friday, 4,444 Israeli troops bombed a refugee camp following a deadly attack on a UN school in the Gaza Strip. The war sparked by an unprecedented attack on Israel by Hamas is entering its ninth month.

Mediation efforts for the first ceasefire in the bloody conflict since a one-week pause in November appear to have stalled a week after US President Joe Biden presented a new roadmap. Hamas has yet to respond to Biden's proposal, while Israel has signaled its openness to dialogue but continues to work on the destruction of the Palestinian Islamist group. Gaza faced Israeli attacks on land, sea and air on Friday, while witnesses said the Nuseirat camp in central Gaza was attacked again, a day after Israel's attack on the UN school.
In a new diplomatic effort, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will visit Israel and key regional partners Egypt, Jordan and Qatar starting Monday. His visit to the Middle East will be his eighth since the start of the war, according to the State Department. The Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in nearby Deir al-Balah said Thursday's airstrike killed at least 37 people. The Israeli army said the strike targeted "terrorists" hiding in three classrooms.
On Friday, the army and the Hamas-run state press agency reported a new Israeli attack on a school run by the United Nations Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in the Al-Shati refugee camp.
The army said it struck Hamas militants operating from a container on the school's grounds in northern Gaza. An AFP cameraman saw Palestinians examining the charred remains of the container after the attack, and the press agency said three people were killed in the attack.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) said hundreds of displaced Gazans were taking shelter in the Nuseirat school, which came under attack "without warning" on Thursday.

Narendra Modi swearing-in ceremony: Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will leave Dhaka for Delhi at 11 am today.
Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi will take oath of office in the capital on Sunday in the presence of a host of foreign dignitaries, including leaders of neighbouring countries. He is scheduled to meet these foreign leaders the next day.
Maldives President Mohamed Muiz, whose apparent bias towards China has strained ties with India, is also likely to attend the big event. Muiz along with several Maldivian government officials are likely to leave for the ceremony in New Delhi on Saturday.
Neighbouring countries invited to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's swearing-in ceremony include leaders of Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal, Mauritius and Seychelles.
Among them, Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Nepali Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda have also confirmed their attendance.
Dahal and Ranil Wickremesinghe will arrive in Delhi on June 9. Hasina is likely to fly to Delhi today.
Dahal and Modi spoke over the phone and confirmed his participation, ANI reported. "As the date of the swearing-in ceremony has been rescheduled, Sheikh Hasina will leave Dhaka for Delhi at 11 am on Saturday, June 8, after attending the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and will return at noon on June 10," said Bangladesh PM's speechwriter M. Nazrul Islam.
New Delhi invited these politicians as part of India's Neighbourhood First policy.
Muiz's visit to India could be a key step in easing tensions between the two traditional partners. One of Muiz's predecessors, Abdullah Yameen, attended Modi's swearing-in ceremony in May 2014.
Relations between India and the Maldives have deteriorated since Muizz came to power in November 2023. He has called on India to withdraw its military personnel from the country. He was on the "Quit India" list during the elections.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was attacked by a man in a square in Copenhagen, her office said, adding that an arrest had been made.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was "attacked" by a man in a square in Copenhagen on Friday, her office said. EU heads of state and governments immediately condemned the attack.
In a statement to AFP, the Danish Prime Minister's Office said Frederiksen was "shocked by the incident" but did not provide further details.
Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was attacked by a man in Copenhagen's Kurtorvet on Friday night. "The man has since been arrested," the statement said.
The incident comes after a spate of attacks on politicians across the political spectrum while working or campaigning in Germany ahead of this week's EU elections.
On May 15, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot four times at close range as he greeted supporters after a government meeting in the central town of Handlova.
Fico, who survived the assassination attempt, was taken to hospital in a nearby town after the attack, where he underwent two lengthy operations. Two witnesses, Marie-Adrienne and Anna Rabun, told BT they saw Frederiksen arrive at the square just before 6pm, sitting in a nearby fountain. "A man coming from the opposite direction gave her a strong push on the shoulder and she fell to the side," the two women told the paper.
Frederiksen suffered a "strong impact" but did not hit the ground, they said.
Witnesses said the prime minister was then sitting in a nearby cafe.
- 'Despicable act' -
They described the man as tall and thin, and said he tried to run away quickly but had not got far when men in suits grabbed him and forced him to the ground.
