Delhi news: Dubai-bound flight receives bomb hoax threat email

Delhi News: Dubai-bound flight receives bomb threat email

A Dubai-bound flight received a bomb threat email at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) on Monday, officials said, adding that nothing suspicious was found during the flight.

"An email was received at 9.35 am on Monday at the DIAL office at IGI airport warning of a bomb attack on the Delhi-Dubai flight. No bomb was found during inspection of the aircraft," a senior police official said.

In recent months, Delhi has received a number of bomb threats against schools, museums and medical facilities. However, no bomb was found in the national capital. On June 12, two museums, National Museum and Railway Museum, and two psychiatric facilities, IHBAS (Institute of Human Behavioural and Allied Sciences) and VIMHANS (Vidyasagar Institute of Mental Health, Neurology and Allied Sciences), received e-mails containing bomb threats. The National Museum at Kartavya Path, Railway Museum at Chanakyapuri, Gandhi Museum at Daryaganj and several other places received e-mails alleging that bombs had been planted on their premises, officials said. They added that two other medical institutions, IHBAS at Shahdara and Vimhans Hospital at Lajpat Nagar, also received threatening e-mails with the same content. Following the tip-off and information about these e-mails, bomb detection teams, bomb disposal services, fire brigade and local police conducted thorough inspection of the premises. However, nothing suspicious was found at any of the places.

In another similar incident, Chachaner Hospital in Delhi also received a bomb threat on April 30. On May 1, over 150 schools were threatened with emails from a Russia-based email service. On May 14, seven hospitals in Delhi and Tihar Jail received bomb threats from the same Cyprus-based postal service. On May 22, North Block, which houses the Ministry of Home Affairs offices, received a bomb threat email using the domain gmail.com.

The Special Cell of Delhi Police is investigating the bomb threats made via email.

Czech police release first video of Nikhil Gupta's extradition to the US

Nikhil Gupta (52), an Indian national, was extradited to the US from the Czech Republic on June 14 after his arrest in Prague last year.

Czech police on Monday released the first images of Nikhil Gupta's extradition to the US. The Indian national is alleged to have been involved in a contract killing plot against Sikh extremist Gurpatwant Singh Panun on American soil.

Nikhil Gupta (52) was extradited to the US from the Czech Republic on Friday, June 14, after his arrest in Prague a year ago.

Czech police posted a video on social media platforms purporting to show Nikhil Gupta being "safely transported from Prague airport." Video images were posted showing the Indian national (whose face has been blurred) being escorted onto a plane. Earlier, Czech Justice Minister Pavel Blazek confirmed that Nikhil Gupta had been extradited to the US.

"Following my decision (on June 3), Nikhil Gupta, an Indian national, was extradited to the United States on Friday (June 14) for prosecution on a charge of conspiracy to commit murder by oath with intent to murder," Pavel said. Posted by Blazek

The US Department of Justice said the alleged murderer, Nikhil Gupta, "has been a vocal critic of the Indian government and heads a US-based organisation which advocates for the separation of Punjab."

The Ministry of External Affairs said it had set up a "high-level" investigation committee to look into the case.

Enough time to debate on candidate": CPI's Annie Raja on Wayanad poll

"Enough time to debate on candidate": CPI's Annie Raja on contesting Wayanad poll

The seat has fallen vacant as Rahul Gandhi has decided to retain his Rae Bareli seat. In the recent Lok Sabha elections, Annie Raja was the runner-up from Wayanad. Communist Party of India (CPI) leader Annie Raja, who came second to Rahul Gandhi in the Wayanad seat in the Lok Sabha in the recent general elections, on Monday said there is "enough time" to vote for a candidate. For the upcoming by-election in Wayanad, lawmakers from the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala, where the CPI is affiliated, have announced that they will retain Rae Bareli and leave Wayanad. It will be my party's decision whether I will contest again. "No elections have been announced so far... so we have ample time to discuss candidates within the party and within the LDF," Raja told ANI.

On the old party's decision to nominate Rahul Gandhi's sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for the Wayanad by-election (which will be her electoral debut), Raja stressed that the Congress needs "more and more" women lawmakers.

"I am happy that the UDF has announced a woman candidate for the constituency," she said. The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) is the main opposition alliance in Kerala. According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), Rahul Gandhi, who won the Wayanad seat for the first time in the last national elections in 2019, retained the seat with 647,445 votes, while CPI's Raja came second with 283,023 votes. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Kerala leader K. Surendran came third with 141,045 votes.

Faulty signal, speeding freight train: Has caused West Bengal train crash

Faulty signal, speeding freight train: What caused West Bengal train crash

A combination of a signalling fault on the tracks before the New Jalpaiguri station and human error by the driver of the freight train are likely to have led to a deadly collision in West Bengal that killed nine people and injured dozens, said railway officials, adding that the commissioner of railway safety (CRS) has launched a probe into the accident.

“The actual cause of the accident will be clear after the CRS report,” railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said after an inspection at the spot around 4pm. Railway Board chairperson Jaya Varma Sinha confirmed that human error may have played a role in the crash, the worst train accident in India since the Balasore accident in June last year that killed 296 people.

“Prima facie, it appears to be human error but we will know more after the inquiry… let me assure you that safety is our priority,” said Sinha.

The nine people killed include the driver of the goods train as well as the guard and seven passengers of the Kanchanjunga Express, which was headed from Sabroom in Tripura to Kolkata in West Bengal., carrying 1,300 people.

"Unfortunately, the (goods train) driver also died in the accident... Whatever one concludes from the circumstances, it appears that signals were ignored," she said.

At 8.55 am, the goods train rammed into the rear of the Kanchanjunga Express, about 10 km from New Jalpaiguri station, just before Rangapani town.

According to internal documents seen , the automatic signalling system between Ranipatra railway station and Chatarhat Junction, XX station head of New Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, had not been functioning since 5.50 am on Monday, prompting the station master of New Jalpaiguri to instruct (check) that a warning marked "T/A912" would now be sent to all drivers passing through that section.

Can you tell us anything about why the signal system did not work and why this is a recurring problem on Indian routes?

The T/A912 authorisation allows pilots to ignore red signals on the affected sections, subject to certain key provisions. One of them stipulates that pilots must drive at less than 15km/h in clear weather and less than 10km/h in rain (as was the case on the Monday morning circuit).
