"Enough time to debate on candidate": CPI's Annie Raja on contesting Wayanad poll
The seat has fallen vacant as Rahul Gandhi has decided to retain his Rae Bareli seat. In the recent Lok Sabha elections, Annie Raja was the runner-up from Wayanad. Communist Party of India (CPI) leader Annie Raja, who came second to Rahul Gandhi in the Wayanad seat in the Lok Sabha in the recent general elections, on Monday said there is "enough time" to vote for a candidate. For the upcoming by-election in Wayanad, lawmakers from the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala, where the CPI is affiliated, have announced that they will retain Rae Bareli and leave Wayanad. It will be my party's decision whether I will contest again. "No elections have been announced so far... so we have ample time to discuss candidates within the party and within the LDF," Raja told ANI.
On the old party's decision to nominate Rahul Gandhi's sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for the Wayanad by-election (which will be her electoral debut), Raja stressed that the Congress needs "more and more" women lawmakers.
"I am happy that the UDF has announced a woman candidate for the constituency," she said. The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) is the main opposition alliance in Kerala. According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), Rahul Gandhi, who won the Wayanad seat for the first time in the last national elections in 2019, retained the seat with 647,445 votes, while CPI's Raja came second with 283,023 votes. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Kerala leader K. Surendran came third with 141,045 votes.
