At the meeting in Delhi on Monday, the Philippine ambassador also highlighted discussions on a possible visit of a high-level delegation later this year to mark the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties. Amid ongoing tensions with China, Philippine Ambassador to India Josel Francisco Ignacio said on Monday that the BrahMos missile provides a "credible defense" to the Southeast Asian country and is a sign of India's "growing" capabilities.
"India and the Philippines are entering a new phase of our relationship and our engagement is becoming deeper. We are breaking new ground in cooperation, including in defense, space and financial technology," he said at a meeting organized by the Observer Research Foundation (ORF). In January 2022, Manila and New Delhi signed a deal worth $374.96 million to export a land-based version of the anti-ship cruise missile with a range of about 290 km. As previously reported, deliveries of launchers and missiles to the Philippines began in April of this year.
The Philippines has been embroiled in a series of clashes with China in the South China Sea in recent months. Last week, Chinese coast guards seriously injured a Filipino sailor while attempting to disrupt a troop resupply mission at Second Thomas Shoal.
Tensions between the two countries have been at a high level, especially due to repeated standoffs between the two countries at Second Thomas Shoal, part of the Spratly Islands.
An arbitral tribunal at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague ruled in 2016 that Beijing has no claim to the area that is part of the Philippines' exclusive economic zone (EEZ). But China has since refused to recognise the tribunal's jurisdiction to adjudicate the dispute.
India supports the Philippines' claims over the region. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated this during his visit to Manila in March 2024. According to Francisco Ignacio, India's support for Manila in the dispute was first made clear in June 2023.
