In the ancient city of Derbent, gunmen set fire to a synagogue and attacked a Russian Orthodox church, while in the regional capital Makhachkala, they attacked a traffic police station, another church and a synagogue.
Dagestani leader Sergei Melikov said fighting had stopped. He added that six militants had been killed, according to the Interfax news agency.
