Classmates To Be Chiefs Of Indian Army And Navy Together
The appointments of Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi and Admiral Dinesh Tripathi have also come around the same time
For the first time in Indian military history, two classmates, Vice Admiral Upendra Dwivedi and Admiral Dinesh Tripathi, would join the Indian Army and Indian Navy.
Chief of the Navy, Admiral Dinesh Tripathi and Vice Chief of Army Staff, Vice Admiral Upendra Dwivedi visit Sainik School, Rewa, Madhya Pradesh. They attended school together from class 5A in the early 1970s.
The matriculation numbers of the two officers were also close to each other. Vice Admiral Dwivedi's matriculation number was 931 and Admiral Tripathi's matriculation number was 938.
Their bond was strong from day one and they kept in touch throughout their time at school. They served in various military units.
Defence officials who know both officers said the strong friendship between the top military leadership is very important in strengthening inter-service cooperation.
"This rare honour of training two brilliant students who will head their respective branches of the armed forces 50 years from now belongs to the Sainik School in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh," Defence Ministry spokesperson A. Bharat Bhushan Babu said. Their bond was strong from the first day they joined the school and they kept in touch all the time despite being in different armed forces.

Admiral Tripathi took over as Commander of the Indian Navy on May 1, while Vice Admiral Dwivedi will assume his new post tomorrow.
Vice Admiral Dwivedi has been the long-serving Commander of Northern Command and has overseen the ongoing operations at the military standoff at the Line of Control in eastern Ladakh.
