Donald Trump strikes again: Former president proposes automatic green card issuance for foreign graduates of US universities
US presidential candidate Donald Trump first claimed that immigrants pollute the country's blood, then said he welcomes immigrants from "good" countries such as Denmark, Switzerland, Norway. Now, his latest plan is to automatically grant green cards to foreign graduates of US universities in a relatively short time. Is anyone a little surprised?
Getting a green card in the US is a tough job, the difficulty of which would probably rival the capture of Cerberus and repatriation. And legal permanent residence is only the first step towards US citizenship, which can take decades in some cases. Many Indians have tried it by living and working in the US for decades, going through some pretty tedious paperwork, or marrying someone who is already a US citizen. Unfortunately, many also failed.
But if Donald Trump becomes US president again (and decides to keep his promise), it may actually become easier for Indian students to get a green card. In a surprising shift from his previous stance on immigration, former President Donald Trump announced a bold plan to automatically grant green cards to foreign graduates of US universities if re-elected. The announcement, made during a podcast interview with a Silicon Valley investor, marks a departure from President Trump's traditionally tough rhetoric on immigration.
During the podcast hosted by Chamath Palihapitiya and others, President Trump expressed his determination to retain the talent educated at American universities. He argued fervently for making green cards a standard perk for graduates, regardless of which college they attended. President Trump stressed that this policy should also include graduates of prestigious universities such as Harvard and MIT, as well as junior colleges across the country. "It's so sad that we're losing people from Harvard and MIT, the best universities, and the smaller colleges that are also phenomenal universities," President Trump lamented on the All In podcast. "I think you should automatically get a green card as part of your degree to stay in this country, and that goes for junior colleges too."
