Even 0.001% Negligence in NEET will not be accepted- SC

The Supreme Court on Monday asked the central government and the National Testing Agency (NTA) not to admit any errors in the conduct of this year's National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), warning that even 0.001% lapses must be dealt with thoroughly. This highlights the chaos in India's most important medical entrance exam, which could jeopardize the future of lakhs of children.
A vacation bench of Justices Vikram Nath and SVN Bhati was hearing a petition by 32 candidates seeking cancellation of the May 5 exam citing allegations of document leaks, cheating, manipulation in exam centres and discrepancies in declaration of results.
The court issued the notice and published it on July 8 along with a host of similar petitions on the issue.

"We all know how much effort our children have put in for this exam. We have to be firm." "If mistakes have been made, they must say they have admitted to the mistake as it builds confidence in the system. It should not be construed as a controversial case," the court said. "Even if there is 0.001% negligence on the part of anyone, it needs to be thoroughly investigated," the court told central government advocate Kanu Agarwal and NTA's Vardhaman Kaushik. Protests have been going on across India for weeks, with thousands of students taking to the streets in opposition to the trial this year. They are accused of leaking exam papers, inflating grades and awarding marks arbitrarily, even as the opposition has demanded a Supreme Court-supervised investigation into the allegations. "Prime Minister Narendra Modi has remained silent as usual about manipulating the future of over 2.4 million students in the NEET exam," senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said in a post on X in Hindi.

The government has repeatedly said it will not tolerate cheating or misconduct, but has also ruled out scrapping the entire exam over alleged problems at some centres. India's Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said Sunday that initial information indicated some students had received remediation due to lack of time. "... cheating has come to light in two places. I assure students and parents that the government is taking this matter seriously. We have received information and will follow up on all issues at the critical time," Pradhan said.
