History of Nalanda University
In 2007, the Bihar Assembly passed an Act to lay the foundation stone for a new university, based on a proposal by then President APJ Abdul Kalam. The government provided 455 hectares of land for the university, which was established by a special Act of Parliament on November 25, 2010 and designated a national institution, The Hindu reported.
The new university began operations on September 1, 2014, at a temporary location with just 14 students. The interim venue, Rajgir International Convention Centre, 10 km from Old Nalanda, was inaugurated by the then External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in September 2014.
