Former US President Donald Trump has often claimed that if he is re-elected as president, he can resolve the conflict between Russia and Ukraine in one day. However, Russian UN Ambassador Vasily Nebenzia has argued that the Ukraine crisis cannot be resolved within 24 hours.
During last week's debate with US President Joe Biden, President Trump claimed that Vladimir Putin would never have attacked Ukraine if the US had a real president that the Russian president respected.
"Russians and Ukrainians are dead." "I want them to stop dying. And I'm going to do it -- I'm going to do it within 24 hours," Trump said at a CNN town hall meeting in May 2023. He repeated this claim many times during the US presidential campaign. "If we had a real president, if we had a president who knew who Putin looked up to... he would never have attacked Ukraine," Trump claimed, according to the Associated Press.
Nebenzia said the war could end in April 2022 during the Istanbul talks, when Russia and Ukraine were "very close" to an agreement. Although Russia had invaded Ukraine two months earlier, on February 24, 2022, Moscow claims that its "special military operation" began in 2014 after the conflict in eastern Ukraine that led to Russia's annexation of the Crimean Peninsula.
The Russian ambassador accused Ukraine's Western allies of sabotaging the April 2022 peace agreement and encouraging Kiev to continue fighting Russia.
He noted that Zelensky is now "walking around with a so-called peace plan, which is not a peace plan, it's a joke." At a meeting in Switzerland last month, nearly 80 countries supported the idea that Ukraine's "territorial integrity" should be the basis of a peace agreement to end the war.
However, some major developing countries rejected this, and Russia did not attend the conference. Nebenzia highlighted Putin's June 14 proposal to "immediately" order a ceasefire in Ukraine and begin negotiations if Kiev withdraws its troops from the four regions annexed by Moscow in 2022 and abandons plans to join NATO.
After a full-scale invasion of Russia, Ukrainian forces managed to stop the advance on the capital. The main fighting is concentrated in the south and east of Ukraine, where the Russian government has illegally annexed four regions, but does not fully control any of them. Ukraine is still struggling to stabilize parts of the front line, mainly due to the delayed arrival of major military aid from the United States, which was finally approved in April after several months. Russia has taken advantage of Ukraine's lack of weapons and launched an offensive, making significant gains.
