Hamas withdraws from Gaza ceasefire talks: report

A senior Hamas official told AFP on Sunday that Palestinian militants had withdrawn from Gaza ceasefire talks, citing Israeli "massacres" and a withdrawal of its negotiating stance. Another Hamas official said the group's military leader, Mohammed Deif, was "fine" and available to work, despite a massive Israeli bombing of a camp in southern Gaza that reportedly targeted a wanted Hamas commander.

Gaza's health ministry said 92 people were killed in the attack.

Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh had informed international mediators from Qatar and Egypt of the end of talks on a ceasefire plan first outlined by US President Joe Biden in May, the official said. The first phase of the agreement would have called for a six-week ceasefire in exchange for most of the hostages captured in Hamas' Oct. 7 attack on Israel for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons.

Haniya said Hamas was suspending negotiations "due to the occupying power's (Israel) lack of seriousness, its continuing policy of delays and obstruction, and the ongoing massacre of unarmed civilians."

"Hamas has shown great flexibility to reach an agreement and end the aggression, and is ready to resume negotiations if the occupying government shows seriousness in achieving a ceasefire and prisoner exchange."

Haniya said in a statement late Saturday that he had called mediators and other countries to urge them to pressure Israel to stop its attacks.

Israel said Deif, whom it sees as one of the "masterminds" of the October 7 attack, was the target of an attack on the al-Mawasi camp in the southern Gaza Strip, where tens of thousands of Palestinians who fled from other areas are gathered.

Hamas, however, did not confirm that Deif was at the camp, but said he was alive and working.

"Commander Mohammed Deif has direct and comfortable oversight of the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades and the resistance forces' operations," the official said, referring to Hamas' armed wing.

The next moment, all the color seemed to drain from his face... He turned pale and I could see blood on the side of his face," Mills told the NYT.

I went to the side of the stage, where they (Secret Service agents) took him away. There was a lot of pushing, shoving, screaming. "I blocked everything out and tried to capture the historic moment. That's my job. That's what we do ... every photographer that was at the pool that day," Mills added.

Secret Service faces serious questions about security and roof access at Trump event

In the wake of the assassination attempt on Donald Trump, concerns and questions are growing about how a sniper gained access to the roof at the outdoor rally, about 150 meters from the former president's podium.

Sources say the shots were fired from the "3 o'clock position" of President Trump's podium, and the gunfire came from President Trump's right side. Seconds after the shots were fired, a Secret Service sniper began firing at the suspect found on the roof.

Notably, the shooter was outside the secured area, raising questions about the size of the area, the efforts to search and secure the American Glass Research building, and even how the shooter was able to get onto the roof.

President Joe Biden said Sunday that he has directed U.S. Secret Service Director of Intelligence Kimberly Cheatle to "review all security arrangements for the Republican National Convention." What exactly happened? And I’ll share the results of that independent review with the American people,” Biden said.

Law enforcement sources say that part of the aftermath will include a review of whether the Secret Service had enough assets to protect Trump days ahead of officially becoming the Republican presidential nominee and whether procedures were followed to conduct security sweeps of the building that offered a vantage point for the alleged shooter.

“Foundationally, one of the most basic elements of site security, especially a site that’s outside and largely uncontrolled, is (to) eliminate sight lines to this space where the protectee will be either speaking or just occupying,” former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe said on CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday morning. “When you look at that map, it so clearly points to those buildings that are within it, clearly within shooting range.”

FBI now leading the investigation into attempted assassination

It is not yet clear how the shooter was able to obtain rooftop access in relatively close proximity, or why that building was left outside the “hard” security perimeter. The FBI is now the lead agency investigating the attempted assassination. But this vulnerability issue will need to be investigated not only by Congress, but also by the Department of Homeland Security and the USSS.

According to CNN affiliate KDKA, a witness told police officers that he saw a man with a gun walking "from roof to roof" just before the attack.

Ben Mather said, "I was standing on the fence when I saw the man moving from roof to roof. (I) told the police officer (the suspected shooter) that I was on the roof," KDKA reported. "When I turned around to go back to where I was, the shooting started, pandemonium ensued, everyone ran, and that was it.Witnesses also told reporters that they saw a person matching the description of the gunman before the shooting." The suspected shooter was seen holding a rifle outside the security cordon of the rally.
