Bangladesh's temporary government leader Muhammad Yunus, for the first time since assuming the position, commented on former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's visit to India. Yunus stated that Hasina making political comments from India is a "hostile move" and she should keep quiet to avoid causing tension between both nations until Dhaka formally asks for her return. 

"No one is at ease with her position in India since we desire her return for a trial." She is currently situated in India, occasionally engaging in conversations, which poses a challenge. If she had kept silent, it would have slipped from our minds; others would have also forgotten it as she would have been lost in her own thoughts. However, while located in India, she is talking and providing guidance. "No one enjoys it," he remarked. 

Yunus seemed to be alluding to Hasina's remarks on August 13, calling for "fairness," stating that individuals linked to recent "acts of terror," murders, and destruction need to be examined, recognized, and penalized. "It is detrimental for both us and for India."

Netanyahu reaffirms his control over Gaza's border with Egypt. 

Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel, continues to affirm that Israeli forces will remain in the Philadelphi Corridor, a vital piece of land in southern Gaza that borders Egypt. 

During an interview with international journalists in Jerusalem, he mentioned that he is willing to explore other options to having Israeli soldiers at the Gaza-Egypt border in a potential long-term ceasefire agreement, although he does not believe it will actually come to fruition. 

Mr. Netanyahu stated that Israeli soldiers should stay in the buffer zone to prevent the smuggling of weapons and potentially Israeli hostages across the border. 

Hamas claimed, as reported by Reuters, that Netanyahu's refusal to withdraw from the Philadelphi corridor is an effort to sabotage the ceasefire deal, and called for increased pressure on Israel. 

Earlier today, Mr. Netanyahu stated that a permanent ceasefire must ensure that the Philadelphi corridor remains secure and cannot be breached. 

He mentioned that they would be open to considering a proposal only if someone could demonstrate consistently, without just talking about it or presenting it in writing or visually, that they can effectively prevent the same incident from happening again on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. 

He then added, "I don't believe that will occur... and as long as it hasn't, we will remain in the current situation." 

The remarks he made slightly hinted at the possibility that Israeli forces might eventually depart from Gaza's southern border, despite his previous strong stance against it. 

However, he reiterated his stance that Israel must maintain troops in that area as a crucial security measure, referring to it as a non-negotiable point. 

He went on to say that individuals had mentioned that it would ruin the agreement. I believe that such an agreement will be our downfall. 

He insisted that it would be illogical, immoral, and insane to make further concessions after Hamas killed six hostages last week. 

“We have boundaries that cannot be crossed.” They have remained the same. "We will stick to them." 

His security advisors, including the defense minister, have openly supported options other than having military troops stationed along the border, such as using technology to monitor the area or having allied forces present. 

Reports to Israeli media have detailed confrontations between the prime minister and his defense officials during meetings, where Mr. Netanyahu has been criticized for allegedly not being interested in reaching a deal at all. 

More and more people in this area seem to think that the prime minister is delaying in order to ultimately target and eliminate the leader of Hamas, Yahya Sinwar, before bringing the war to a close. 

Mr Netanyahu claims that he is defending Israel's security amidst significant global pressure. Hamas is preventing an agreement from being reached. 

Conversations about a long-lasting ceasefire will not start until Israel and Hamas both agree to start the initial phase of a three-part plan, strongly advocated by US President Joe Biden. 

According to Israel's national public radio, a senior official, who remains anonymous, stated that Mossad head David Barnea, who is the chief negotiator, informed mediators that Israel has agreed to remove troops from the border at a later point during the ceasefire negotiations. 

Reaching consensus on the initial phase is proving difficult, as numerous unresolved issues remain.

Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong hosts a private dinner for Prime Minister Modi before their official discussions. 

PM Modi landed in Singapore as part of his two-country tour in Southeast Asia, following his historic visit to Brunei as the first Indian Prime Minister to do so. 

On Wednesday, Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong welcomed his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi for a private dinner before their scheduled discussions on Thursday, which are anticipated to boost collaboration in important sectors like digitalization and semiconductors. 

PM Modi arrived in Singapore as part of a two-nation tour of Southeast Asia, following his historic visit to Brunei, where he became the first Indian Prime Minister to make a bilateral visit to the country. Upon arriving, he was welcomed at the airport by Singapore's Minister for Home Affairs, K Shanmugam. 

Wong invited Modi to a private dinner at the Istana, the presidential palace traditionally used for hosting and entertaining state visitors. Video released by the office of the Singapore Prime Minister depicted the two leaders hugging and engaging in conversation prior to the dinner, where they were accompanied by key aides including external affairs minister S Jaishankar and Singapore's foreign minister Vivian Balakrishnan. 

Wong expressed his joy at the opportunity to meet for a meal at the Istana before the scheduled meetings the following day. Modi mentioned in a different post that he had a "great conversation about various topics". He further stated, "India values its strong bond with Singapore." 

Modi previously expressed his anticipation for upcoming meetings that aim to enhance the friendship between India and Singapore. India's youth power combined with the country's reforms make it a prime choice for investment. He added that they are also excited about strengthening cultural connections.

Modi and Wong are scheduled to discuss strategies for enhancing cooperation in various fields during their meeting on Thursday. They aim to build on the outcomes of the recent India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable, which identified advanced manufacturing and connectivity as emerging areas for partnership. The two parties will announce approximately five agreements, with a significant focus on collaboration in the semiconductor industry. 

External affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that this visit holds significance in enhancing India's Act East policy, its vision of the Indo-Pacific, economic ties with Singapore, and technological collaboration between the two countries. 

After receiving a formal greeting at the Parliament House on Thursday, Modi will also have meetings with senior minister Lee Hsien Long, emeritus senior minister Goh Chok Tong, and President Tharman Shanmugaratnam.

Parents of murdered doctor in Kolkata allege that the police attempted to bribe them

 

The parents of a doctor in Kolkata allege that the police attempted to bribe them after their daughter was murdered. 

The family of the Kolkata doctor stated that when they received the body, a high-ranking police officer tried to give them money, but they promptly turned it down. 

The doctor from Kolkata who was viciously raped and killed last month had parents who claimed that the police initially attempted to offer them money in exchange for keeping the case quiet. The event occurred during the doctor's night shift and has sparked widespread demonstrations throughout the state, calling for immediate action. 

The 31-year-old's parents participated in the protest at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where their daughter's body was discovered on August 9. They claimed that the police were attempting to quickly conclude the case without conducting a proper investigation. 

From the outset, the police attempted to cover up the situation. The father told the protesters that they could not see the body and had to wait at the police station while it was being taken for post-mortem examinations. 

He added that a senior police official tried to give them money when they received the body, but they refused it instantly. 

The parents announced that they will be participating in the protest to show their support for junior doctors who are advocating for justice for their daughter. 

The Kolkata Police is facing severe backlash from both the Opposition and the public for its management of the delicate case. There are concerns about how accused Sanjoy Roy had unrestricted access to every part of the public hospital around the clock. Some reports have also alleged that he would unlawfully set up hospital beds and other amenities for patients in return for payment. 

Phrases aimed at police officers, highlighting the fact that they also have daughters, have been circulating on social media and appearing on signs held by demonstrators during protests in the streets. 

In the midst of public anger, the Calcutta High Court directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the case. Dr Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College, was arrested by the CBI on Monday for suspected financial irregularities at the institution.
