The leader of Hamas has engaged in discussions with mediators from Qatar and Egypt regarding a potential deal for Gaza. On Wednesday, Hamas announced that its negotiation team, headed by Khalil al-Hayya, held meetings with Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and Egypt’s intelligence chief Abbas Kamel to address current developments in Gaza.

 Hamas reiterated its commitment to upholding a ceasefire proposal based on the original US plan and expressed refusal to accept additional stipulations from any party. This stance appeared to be in response to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s insistence on Israeli forces retaining positions along the Philadelphi Corridor on the Gaza-Egypt border. Notably, the statement did not acknowledge alleged new demands from Hamas for the release of prisoners serving life sentences in exchange for the initial group of hostages, which includes women, children, the infirm, and the elderly.

 CIA Director William Burns, serving as the principal US negotiator for Gaza, announced on Saturday that a comprehensive ceasefire plan will be presented within the coming days. The initial proposal, established by US President Joe Biden in June, outlined a three-phase ceasefire agreement to halt the conflict triggered by Hamas's October 7 terrorist attack, contingent upon the liberation of Israeli captives. 

Al-Hayya's discussions with Egyptian and Qatari mediators took place following a meeting between Al-Thani, the relatives of Israeli hostages, National Unity MK Benny Gantz, and World Jewish Congress president Ronald Lauder in Paris. According to Haaretz daily, the Qatari prime minister assured the families of ongoing efforts to secure a hostage deal. Gantz's office issued a statement highlighting the focus on urgent humanitarian concerns related to advancing a hostage agreement and strategies to enhance regional stability. The statement emphasized that negotiation specifics and management were not part of the discussions. Only teams authorized by the state are allowed to conduct this activity.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) hosted an ‘Iftar party’ in response to backlash from the Opposition following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s attendance at Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud’s home for Ganesh Puja. In a reminiscent turn, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla pointed out that former PM Manmohan Singh had invited then CJI KG Balakrishnan to an Iftar party back in 2009, sharing old photos of the event as evidence. This move aimed to challenge the perception of the judiciary's safety during the previous administrations. However, his remarks mentioned that when Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in Ganesh Puja at the Chief Justice's residence, the perception emerged that the "integrity of the judiciary has been compromised." 

Member of Parliament from the Bharatiya Janata Party, Sambit Patra, criticized the Opposition for politicizing the incident and questioned whether the former Prime Minister attended Iftar gatherings with the previous Chief Justice of India. 

"The different branches of democracy should coordinate and show respect towards each other. They should not view each other as adversaries. It is a defining characteristic of democracy that diverse behaviors are exhibited while on and off duty," he stated during a press briefing. 

In reference to a recent photograph featuring Congress leader Rahul Gandhi alongside US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, Sambit Patra remarked, "There is objection to the Prime Minister meeting the Chief Justice, yet no objection when Rahul Gandhi interacts with Ilhan Omar, the Premier of China, and signs Memorandums of Understanding... They raise concerns about Ganesh Puja, but did former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh not attend Iftaar parties? Just as Iftaar is a festival, Ganpati is also a festival, so why the double standard?" 

Union Minister of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Bhupendra Yadav, also criticized the Opposition for turning the incident into a political issue. 

"Ganpati represents the deity of new beginnings. He embodies a representation of optimism. The collaboration of various sectors of the nation to commemorate the greatness of Ganesha is a positive indicator of a robust democracy, and is in line with our cultural values that emphasize collective celebration. Those who harbor negativity are encouraged to refrain from making disparaging remarks about events that hold significance in India's rich traditions for the betterment of society and religious harmony," he stated on X. "Please avoid diminishing the importance of our festivals," the minister added. Opposition queries Modi's visit to CJI's residence. A political dispute arose on Thursday regarding Modi's visit to CJI Chandrachud's home, as opposition figures, notably from the Shiv Sena (UBT), expressed apprehensions about the potential impact of the meeting on the judiciary's autonomy.

In response to the criticism, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) asserted that the purpose of the visit was solely to participate in the Ganpati celebrations and was intended to be a cultural event.

A video showed BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla condemning Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi and other members of the INDI Alliance for politicizing the Prime Minister's visit to the Chief Justice of India's residence.

Poonawalla censured Chaturvedi for making what he described as a shocking, disgraceful, and reprehensible accusation against Chief Justice of India, Chandrachud Ji. His offense is that Prime Minister Modi visited his residence for Ganesh Puja, a customary practice during Ganesh Chaturthi where people visit each other's homes as part of their cultural traditions. The politicization of a simple puja by Priyanka Chaturvedi and the baseless accusations against the Chief Justice of India for not accommodating her personal timetable in a specific case is alarming. The Uddhav Sena, familiar with such cultural norms, should understand this well. "This constitutes contempt of court," he declared. 

"It is alarming, it is unacceptable, it undermines the judiciary, the Supreme Court, and the Chief Justice of India, all because Prime Minister Modi has visited as he would visit the homes of many others for the Ganesh Puja," Poonawalla stated in the video.

A Sikh group supported by the BJP is organizing a protest at Congress leader Sonia Gandhi's house in Delhi, expressing disapproval of Rahul Gandhi's statements made in the US regarding the religious liberties of the Sikh community in India. Asserting their belief in greater security under the BJP government compared to the Congress regime, individuals are requesting an apology from Mr. Gandhi for his statements. 

During his recent trip to the US, Mr. Gandhi stated that the ongoing struggle in India transcends mere political interests. Engaging with a Sikh attendee, Mr. Gandhi highlighted the contentious issues of turban, kada, and Gurudwara access for the Sikh community in India. "That is the crux of the conflict, not only for him but for all faiths."

Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has denounced Mr. Gandhi's remarks as "nefarious," alleging that he is disseminating "hazardous narratives" abroad.

In allusion to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots that ensued following the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards, the minister asserted, "If there has ever been an instance in our past when as a community we have experienced fear, a feeling of instability, and a fundamental threat, it has been when Rahul Gandhi's lineage has occupied positions of authority." Mr. Gandhi's remarks align with the Congress's commitment to secular principles and support for religious freedom. However, the timing of his comments is inopportune, given the anti-India narrative being promoted by certain Sikh expatriates.

Protest against Kolkata rape-murder case persists as Mamata government rejects doctors' preconditions for negotiations. 

The West Bengal government declined junior doctors' requests for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's presence and a live broadcast as prerequisites for discussions to resolve the ongoing 'cease work' protest related to the alleged rape and murder of a 31-year-old female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.

On the 33rd day of protests, doctors continued their sit-in outside Swasthya Bhawan in Kolkata for a second consecutive day. Minister of State for Health Chandrima Bhattacharya indicated the government's willingness to participate in talks but suggested that "political forces" may be influencing the protests.

The doctors promptly rejected these allegations as baseless and affirmed their intention to sustain their protests until their demands are addressed. 

While urging the doctors to comply with the Supreme Court's directive and return to work, the minister refrained from discussing whether the government would implement any punitive actions against those contravening the court's instructions. 

At the same time, RG Kar hospital, administered by the state, postponed a hearing for 51 doctors accused of fostering an environment of intimidation and disrupting the institution's democratic processes. The investigation is set to continue on Friday.

In addition, TMC officials gave veiled threats to the protesting doctors, accusing them of being "anti-nationals" and hinting that the party could arrange counter-demonstrations.
