9 Dead, 2,800 Injured As Pagers Explode Across Lebanon, Hezbollah Blames Israel

9 Dead, 2,800 Injured As Pagers Explode Across Lebanon, Hezbollah Blames Israel

Iran's Ambassador to Lebanon Mojtaba Amani has been injured in the incident

Nine individuals have lost their lives and 2,800 have sustained injuries due to the detonation of pagers throughout Lebanon. Hezbollah has attributed these explosions to Israel. The organization has its own telecommunications infrastructure and has instructed its members to refrain from using conventional mobile phones since the onset of the Gaza conflict nearly a year ago. The directive was issued to prevent Israeli violations of the technology.

Nine individuals perished and over 2,800 sustained injuries, with a significant number in critical condition, in Lebanon from a coordinated explosion of explosives aimed at the US-designated terrorist organization Hezbollah. Iran's state media has confirmed that its Ambassador to Lebanon, Mojtaba Amani, was injured in the incident.

The explosions occurred at approximately 3:30 pm local time in Lebanon (6 pm IST). Lebanese Health Minister Firass Abiad verified that nine individuals lost their lives and approximately 2,800 sustained injuries in the event. During a televised press briefing, the minister stated that the explosions resulted in the deaths of nine individuals, including a young girl, with over 2,800 individuals injured, of whom more than 200 are in critical condition.

He added that the injuries were primarily located on the face, hands, and stomach. The daughter of a member of Hezbollah, aged 10, died in the Bekaa Valley in eastern Lebanon. A non-affiliated monitoring group reported that fourteen individuals were injured in recent explosions in Syria. Hezbollah, a group prohibited by both the United States and the European Union, serves as Lebanon's political and military authority with support from Iran. Hezbollah supports Hamas, who has been in conflict with Israel in Gaza since October 2023.

The offspring of Hezbollah legislators Ali Ammar and Hassan Fadlallah were included among those who perished, as per a source with close ties to the organization as told to the news agency AFP.

Speculation surrounding the cause of the explosions varies, with some sources suggesting that the overheating of lithium batteries due to an electronic signal breach, similar to a cyber attack, may have been to blame. Other reports suggest that a thin layer of explosives was inserted into the pagers prior to distribution. We are currently unable to authenticate either of these assertions.

Hezbollah has attributed the attack to Israel and asserts that it represents the most significant security breach the organization has encountered. All the pagers detonated simultaneously, according to Hezbollah, who accused Israel of compromising their communication system.

Jammu and Kashmir conducts initial Assembly elections in ten years

Jammu and Kashmir conducts initial Assembly elections in ten years. Voting is currently ongoing in 24 out of the 90 constituencies. This marks the first Assembly elections in the region since 2014 and the first following the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.

Additionally, it is the inaugural Assembly election held in Jammu and Kashmir as a Union Territory. When Article 370 was revoked, the state was reorganized into the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Statehood is a prominent issue in the elections, with promises for its reinstatement made by the BJP, including PM Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, as well as the Congress and the National Conference, who are running in a coalition.

Another significant participant is Mehbooba Mufti's Peoples Democratic Party. Other notable parties consist of Abdul Ghani Lone's People's Conference, Ghulam Nabi Azad's Democratic Progressive Azad Party, and Altaf Bukhari's Apni Party. A noteworthy development is the participation of prohibited Jamaat-e-Islami in the elections, endorsing certain candidates. Polling is scheduled in the following constituencies: four seats in Pulwama, two in Shopian, three in Kulgam, seven in Anantnag, three in Kishtwar, three in Doda, and two each in Ramban and Banihal. Eight of the constituencies are located in Jammu and 16 are in the Kashmir valley.

Pulwama is among the constituencies attracting close attention for the election contest. PDP youth leader Waheed ur Rehman Para, a first-time election candidate, is facing off against former party veteran Mohammad Khalil Band, who is now affiliated with the National Conference. Mr. Para, aged 36, supported Mr. Band as a youth leader from the PDP during the 2008 and 2014 elections.

He is currently out on bail in a case related to the strict anti-terrorism law, UAPA. Mr. Band, aged 73, has served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) thrice. The constituency is traditionally held by the People's Democratic Party (PDP), but the party is encountering challenges in the upcoming election due to the candidacy of Talat Majeed, supported by the Jamaat.

The Jamaat has formed a partnership with the Awami Ittehad Party led by Engineer Rashid, who achieved a surprising victory over former chief minister Omar Abdullah in the Lok Sabha elections, garnering attention for his political skills. The constituency of Srigufwara-Bijbehara in South Kashmir is set to witness Iltija Mufti, daughter of PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti, participate in her inaugural Assembly election. This decision comes following the former chief minister's choice to abstain from entering the electoral race. Ms. Mufti, aged 37, is in competition with the National Conference's Bashir Ahmad Shah and the BJP's Jammu and Kashmir Vice President, Sofi Yousuf.

In Kulgam, the CPM's Mohammed Yousuf Tarigami aims to protect a seat he has held since 1996, despite facing a new challenge from a candidate supported by the Jamaat. In an interview with NDTV, Mr. Tarigami, the consensus candidate of the Congress-National Conference, stated that the Jamaat has a history of changing stance on entering electoral politics. He emphasized that there is no significant increase in support for the party in the region. Recent months have witnessed a rise in terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir, with three encounters occurring last week resulting in the deaths of two Army personnel and at least five terrorists.

Swati Maliwal criticizes Atishi disapprove selection of Atishi as Delhi's Chief Minister

Swati Maliwal criticizes Atishi, alleging her family opposed the execution of Afzal Guru. Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal, currently at odds with the Aam Aadmi Party, expressed disapproval of the selection of Atishi as Delhi's Chief Minister.

Maliwal stated that her parents had advocated against the execution of terrorist Afzal Guru. Rajya Sabha Member Swati Maliwal criticized the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for appointing Atishi as the new Chief Minister of Delhi, citing that her family had actively opposed the hanging of convicted terrorist Afzal Guru.

This statement came in response to the swift decision-making process on Tuesday, where AAP's Delhi MLAs gathered in the morning to elect Atishi as their legislative leader. The convening of the meeting was prompted by the recent announcement made by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal regarding his decision to step down from his position.

Kejriwal, who was recently granted bail in the Delhi liquor policy case, has stated his intention to refrain from resuming his duties as Chief Minister until re-elected. In response to the Aam Aadmi Party's selection of Atishi as the next Delhi Chief Minister, Swati Maliwal criticized the party. "Today marks a somber day for Delhi," expressed Maliwal on social media. She highlighted that Atishi's parents were among the activists and professors who had endorsed a mercy plea for convicted terrorist Afzal Guru in 2013.

"A candidate, whose relatives campaigned earnestly to prevent the execution of terrorist Afzal Guru, is being appointed as the Chief Minister of Delhi." Her parents submitted appeals for clemency to the esteemed President in an effort to obtain relief for convicted terrorist Afzal Guru. As per their statements, Afzal Guru was unjustly implicated in a political plot, as stated by Maliwal, who has had a strained relationship with the Aam Aadmi Party.

Prime Minister Modi celebrates his 74th birthday today-RSS worker to third time Prime Minister

Prime Minister Modi celebrates his 74th birthday today. Starting as an RSS worker, he has now entered his third term as Prime Minister, showcasing a notable trajectory of success within the BJP. Hailing from Gujarat, he has transitioned from a modest upbringing to become the longest-serving non-Congress Prime Minister in India. Narendra Damodardas Modi hails from Vadnagar, Gujarat, born into a middle-class Hindu family without political ties. Throughout his journey, he has encountered significant occurrences such as the 2002 riots and the implementation of key policies like the GST, CAA, and the revocation of Article 370. Modi assumed the office of Prime Minister of India for a third consecutive term on June 9, making him only the second leader after Jawaharlal Nehru to achieve this milestone. He holds the distinction of being the country's longest-serving non-Congress Prime Minister. Modi, an erstwhile member of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), has guided Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to significant victories in three consecutive general elections.

Turning 74 today, Modi's journey from a humble RSS worker to three-time Prime Minister of India is worth noting.

September 17, 1950: Narendra Damodardas Modi, the third of six children, was born in Vadnagar, Gujarat.

1965: India-Pakistan war erupts over Jammu and Kashmir. Modi provides tea at Vadnagar railway station.

1971- Modi becomes a member of the RSS. Participates in Janasangh satyagraha in Delhi under the leadership of late Atal Bihari Vajpayee, organized to enlist volunteers for the Bangladesh war.

1974- Engages in protests against the economic crisis in Gujarat.

1975- Appointed as general secretary of the Gujarat Lok Sangarsh Samiti, an RSS committee that coordinates opposition to the Emergency in Gujarat. The RSS will be prohibited shortly. Modi was compelled to conceal his whereabouts in Gujarat and resorted to traveling incognito to evade arrest, adopting disguises such as a monk and a Sikh on separate occasions. In 1978, he assumed the role of a regional organizer for the RSS, overseeing operations in Surat and Vadodara. The following year, he served in Delhi focusing on researching and documenting the RSS's account of the Emergency. 1980 marked the establishment of the BJP, leading to Modi's involvement with the party. In 1983, he attained his MA in Political Science through Gujarat University as an external student. Subsequently, in 1987, Modi joined the BJP and was later appointed as the general secretary of Gujarat BJP in 1988. The year concluded with the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh in December 1992. The protestors allege that the Masjid was constructed on the birth site of Lord Ram. Over 2000 individuals perish in the riots that followed.

1995- The BJP secures victory in 121 out of the 182 seats in the Gujarat assembly. Modi was appointed as the General Secretary of the BJP on October 7, 2001 following Keshubhai Patel's resignation as Chief Minister of Gujarat in the aftermath of an earthquake. Modi surpasses Patel to become Gujarat's lengthiest-serving Chief Minister. February 24, 2002: Modi secures victory in the Gujarat assembly by-election in Rajkot II constituency, triumphing over Ashwin Mehta of the Congress. February 27, 2002: A train transporting Hindu pilgrims from Ayodhya, following a event to destroy the Babri Masjid site, is engulfed in flames in Godhra, Gujarat. February 2002: Riots ensue in the aftermath of the Godhra incident. More than 1,000 individuals, primarily of the Muslim faith, lost their lives. Modi has faced criticism, both domestically and internationally, for his perceived inadequate response to quell riots during his tenure as Chief Minister. In April 2002, he offered his resignation at the BJP national executive meeting in Goa, which was not accepted. Subsequently, on December 22, 2002, Modi was sworn in for a second term as the Chief Minister of Gujarat. In 2005, the US State Department declined to grant Modi a travel Visa, citing concerns over religious 'intolerance', a decision that sparked controversy in India. By July 2007, Modi had completed 2,063 consecutive days as the Chief Minister of Gujarat, becoming the longest-serving holder of that position. In the same year, BJP emerged victorious in the Gujarat assembly polls, securing 117 seats. Modi is elected as Chief Minister for the third time. In 2008, Modi successfully convinces Tata Motors to relocate its factory for manufacturing the Nano car to Gujarat from West Bengal amidst farmer protests. On October 22, 2012, British High Commissioner James Bevan meets with Modi to engage in discussions regarding business and investment opportunities. The meeting marked the conclusion of the United Kingdom's ten-year diplomatic boycott of Modi following the deaths of three British citizens in the 2002 Gujarat riots.

December 2012 - Modi secures a fourth consecutive term as Chief Minister of Gujarat. BJP secures victory in 115 out of 182 seats.

January 7, 2013: European Union ambassadors dine with Modi at the residence of the German ambassador in New Delhi. The luncheon concluded a ten-year informal boycott of Modi.

June 9, 2013- Modi is appointed as BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate for the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections.

2014- BJP secures majority with 282 seats in Lok Sabha polls. Modi emerges victorious in the elections in Vadodara and Varanasi. On May 18, 2014, the United States ends a ten-year Visa ban on Modi. President Obama extended an invitation to Washington for Prime Minister Modi on May 26, 2014. After the BJP's significant victory, Modi was sworn in as the 14th Prime Minister of India. The BJP government commenced the 'Make in India' campaign on September 25, 2015, to showcase India as a top global manufacturing hub. On October 2, 2014, PM Modi launched the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, the country's largest cleanliness initiative, commemorating Mahatma Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary. In 2015, the Digital India campaign was initiated to enhance electronic availability of government services through improved online connectivity. On November 8, 2016, PM Modi announced the immediate demonetization of ₹500 and ₹1000 banknotes in a televised national address. The Goods and Services Tax was introduced on June 1, 2017. - The Goods and Services Tax (GST) has replaced various federal and state taxes.

- May 20, 2019 - Prime Minister Modi is featured on the cover page of TIME magazine.

- May 30, 2019 - Modi successfully leads BJP to victory in the Lok Sabha elections, 2019. Modi has been inaugurated for a second term as Prime Minister.

The top police official in Kolkata and two health officials were dismissed after meeting between Banerjee and doctors

The top police official in Kolkata and two health officials were dismissed following a meeting between Mamata Banerjee and doctors. Banerjee expressed positivity about the meeting. I am confident that they also share this belief. Similarly, what purpose does signing the meeting minutes serve if not for mutual agreement?

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, following a discussion with the striking junior doctors, has confirmed her acceptance of three out of the five demands put forward by the protesters. These include the dismissal of two senior health department officials and the Chief of Kolkata police. The police chief of the city's north zone, where RG Kar Medical College is situated, will also be relieved of their duties. Although the deadlock has been resolved, it is anticipated that the protest and work stoppage will persist until formal orders are released in the morning.

"I believe the meeting had a positive outcome." "I'm certain they also hold that belief," she mentioned. "Alternatively, what is the purpose of both parties signing the meeting minutes?" she inquired. Banerjee stated that 99% of the doctors' demands have been accepted, as they are considered "like younger brothers" to the organization.

"They have stated their intention to hold discussions and subsequently make a decision regarding the cessation of work." The Chief Minister has requested them to do so, citing the condition of patients, particularly in districts affected by floods. Doctors say protest will persist until... The announcement is viewed as a form of surrender. The ambiance at the protest venue became jovial following the doctors' return.

The junior doctors proclaimed that the state's approval of their demands marked a significant triumph following their 38-day protest. They stated that the protest and casework can only be lifted upon government delivery. A spokesperson from the Junior Doctors' Forum stated that they have only been provided with verbal assurance. However, they emphasized that their primary objective of dismantling the corruption network within the hospital still stands. "We will persist in advocating for the dismissal of the health secretary," stated another representative.

The State has committed to improving hospital infrastructure and has allocated ₹100 crore for this purpose.

Regarding the removal of the Director of Medical Education and the Director of Health Services, Ms. Banerjee mentioned that they would be transferred to suitable positions.

"We are not disgracing them. They have recently arrived in the position and have committed no offenses. Ms. Banerjee stated that they have accepted the students' lack of trust in them. The Chief Minister previously mentioned that the city police chief Vineet Goyal would continue in his position at least until Durga Puja. He had previously expressed a desire to resign multiple times, but she insisted that he remain in his position. The call for Mr. Goyal's dismissal was made in light of accusations regarding the police's involvement in tampering with evidence following the rape and murder on August 9th. The Supreme Court and the Calcutta High Court have both made comments on this issue on numerous occasions. Last week, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is handling the investigation, detained the hospital's former Principal Sandip Ghosh and a senior officer from the local police force.
