Donald Trump has announced plans to establish an 'Iron Dome' missile defense system in the United States, stating that action must commence without delay.

The Iron Dome is a mobile air defense technology created for Israel, designed to intercept and neutralize short-range missiles and artillery shells aimed at populated regions. On Monday, the recently inaugurated US President Donald Trump declared his intention to sign an executive order for the development of an 'Iron Dome,' fulfilling a commitment he made during his presidential campaign. This advanced air defense mechanism was developed for Israel by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems alongside Israel Aerospace Industries, specifically to counter short-range projectiles threatening civilian areas.

The effectiveness of the Iron Dome has been showcased in various instances, including videos during the Israel-Hamas conflict that erupted on October 7, 2023, as well as during the Iranian assaults on Israel in October 2024.

"We must urgently kickstart the creation of a cutting-edge Iron Dome missile defense system," Donald Trump was quoted by the AFP news agency while addressing a Republican gathering in Miami, coinciding with the swearing-in of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

As he entered the Pentagon, Hegseth informed the press that his inaugural day would be packed, with more executive actions anticipated, including initiatives to eliminate DEI policies at the Pentagon, reinstating troops who were dismissed due to Covid vaccine mandates, and moving forward with the Iron Dome for America — all of which he emphasized would occur swiftly.

Arvind Kejriwal has accused the Haryana government, which is led by the BJP, of contaminating Delhi's raw water supply, likening this act to "biological warfare."

In the midst of escalating exchanges regarding the water quality of the Yamuna, Shilpa Shinde, the CEO of the Delhi Jal Board, rejected Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal’s assertion that the Haryana government had introduced "poison" into the river.

Describing the allegations as “factually incorrect, without foundation, and misleading,” Shinde highlighted in a letter addressed to Delhi's chief secretary, Dharmendra, that such claims could endanger interstate relations and undermine public trust.

Earlier that day, Kejriwal alleged that the BJP-led Haryana administration was responsible for tainting the raw water that supplies Delhi, warning that it could lead to catastrophic outcomes in the capital, a situation he likened to "biological warfare." Meanwhile, Delhi's chief minister, Atishi, during a prior press conference, accused Haryana of intentionally releasing industrial waste into the Yamuna.

In her correspondence, Shinde clarified that the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) actively oversees water quality and adjusts its treatment methods accordingly.

“During the winter months, the natural flow in the Yamuna decreases, leading to an increase in ammonia levels as untreated sewage or industrial waste may mix with it upstream. The water treatment facilities operated by the DJB are equipped to manage ammonia concentrations up to 1 ppm and even handle much higher levels, such as the current 6.5 ppm, through a process of dilution with water sourced from the Carrier Lined Channel and Delhi Sub-Branch,” the letter detailed.

Trump's announcement came after his first phone call with Prime Minister Modi since the Republican assumed office for a second term on January 20. 

On Monday, Reuters reported that Trump stated, "He (PM Modi) will visit the United States sometime in February." 

The phone conversation took place amid speculation in diplomatic circles about the Indian government's efforts to arrange an early meeting between the two leaders.

In the same conversation, President Trump mentioned that immigration was a topic of their discussion, asserting that India would do what is necessary regarding the repatriation of illegal immigrants.

Additionally, reports indicate that 18,000 Indians currently residing in the U.S. may be brought back to satisfy Trump's demands. 

Trump’s hardline approach to illegal immigration is considered to have significantly contributed to his re-election, four years after he lost to Democrat Joe Biden while in office. 

PM Modi's last visit to the U.S. occurred in September of the previous year for the fourth Quad Leaders’ summit, which was hosted by then-President Biden and attended by the leaders of Australia and Japan, Anthony Albanese and Fumio Kishida, respectively. 

Furthermore, during that trip, Modi spoke at the ‘Summit of the Future’ at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar represented the country at Trump’s inauguration in Washington D.C.

In a statement from the White House regarding the Trump-Modi call, it was noted that the conversation was "productive" and included discussions on how to enhance and strengthen collaboration between the two nations.

The possibility of PM Modi visiting the U.S. was also addressed during their discussion, as stated in the release.

Nonetheless, the alterations suggested by the opposition were dismissed after the committee members voted along party lines; the JPC consists of 16 MPs from the BJP or its allies and just 10 from the opposition.

The vote to ratify the acceptance of the 14 amendments is scheduled for January 29, with the final report expected to be submitted by January 31, according to sources cited by NDTV. The committee was initially tasked with completing the report by November 29, while that deadline has now been pushed to February 13, the concluding day of the Budget Session. 

In total, 44 amendments were under discussion. Over the course of six months of in-depth discussions, the committee sought inputs from all members. This was our final gathering... 14 adjustments were approved by the committee through a majority vote. The opposition also proposed amendments... each one was submitted for voting.
