About Russia accused of using chemical chloropicrin in Ukraine
The United States accused Russia on Thursday of using the banned asphyxiant chloropicrin to eliminate the Ukrainian army, which has launched its biggest offensive in two years into the eastern country.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said Russia used an attack control agent, also known as nitrochloroform, "to distract Ukrainian forces from their entry positions and complete the war effort."
The United States claimed that the use of chloropicrin was not an "isolated" incident, adding that it violated the 1993 Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), to which Russia is a party. Moscow said the allegations were untrue and denied using the drug. The Hague-based Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) prohibits the use of chemical weapons worldwide and prohibits the use and mass production of chemical weapons.
What is Chloropicrin?
Trichloronitromethane was used primarily as an insecticide and weapon in World War I.
This gas is a poisonous gas that causes tears and burns to the eyes and skin and affects the lungs. Ingestion may also cause nausea and vomiting.
A soldier in a trench without a gas mask will run away under enemy fire or risk dying after being hit with chloramphenicol.
Both the United States and Ukraine claimed that Russia frequently used tear gas, including "anti-assault agents" or grenades containing CS and CN gas, during "military operations" in Ukraine.
The US said the use of gas was "similar to the 2020 poisoning of late activist Alexi Navalny and the 2018 poisoning of Sergei Skripal." Biological weapons programs, including special forces "supporting the use of chloropicrin against Ukrainian forces."
