Papas (pronounced tuber). When the Inca people first planted potatoes about 8,000 years ago, they gave the potato this name. In the mid-16th century, potatoes were introduced to Europe via Spain and England. However, because of its flowers, the potato was at first considered an ornamental plant rather than a crop. It is said that French Queen Marie Antoinette wore potato flowers in her hair, and her husband Louis XVI wore them in his collar. The Swiss botanist Gaspard Bauhin or Caspar Bauhin (1560-1624) named it tuber solanum tuberosum esculentum (edible tuber solanum), and this name still exists.

Today, 4,000 potato varieties are grown in 130 countries in the world. The story of potatoes in India began with the Portuguese and Dutch traders, but it was the British East India Company that pushed the potato. Potatoes are the third most grown crop worldwide after wheat and rice. On International Potato Day (May 30), let's take a look at some potatoes from around the world.

1. Kumpir (Turkey): Originating from the former Yugoslavia, Turkish Kumpir is a large roasted potato skin stuffed with garlic butter and cheese and served with a variety of sauces. Traditionally, potatoes are baked in a special Kumpir oven and then mashed with butter and cheese to create a nice, creamy consistency. If you're in Istanbul, head to the Ortaköy area to taste some of the best Kumpirs in the city.

3. Colcannon (Ireland): Have you heard the Irish song Colcannon? Have you ever had a Colcannon made of sugar? Green vegetables and green onions are intertwined like a dream scene. Did you cut a hole to hold the melted slices of creamy butter your mom made? This is Colcannon – buttery creamy mashed potatoes mixed with sautéed kale and lightly seasoned with salt and pepper. Colcannon is similar to the Scottish dish Rumbledethumps and the English Bubble & Squeak.

4. Hasselbackspotatis (Sweden): Hasselback is a Swedish baked potato and takes its name from the 18th-century tavern, which was originally a red tent lit only by the hassel trees (hazelnuts) on the flat strip (backen). middle. Restaurang Hasselbacken (Stockholm) opened in 1853, and Hasselbackspotatis (pronounced Hazellope potatoes) started before 1940 and became popular as a chicken and meat dish.

5. Perkedel Kentang (Indonesia): Perkedel or bergedel in Indonesian and begedil in Malay is a fried potato pancake side dish made with fried potatoes, meat and spices. Interestingly, the name perkedel is derived from the Dutch word frikandel, meaning fried meat pie. Perkedel is crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside, and is best eaten hot. Other types of Perkedel are Perkedel tahu (tofu fritters), Perkedel tempe (tempeh fritters) and Perkedel Jagung (corn fritters). Dishes. Originally a breakfast dish, rosti is also known as a classic trekking dish that is readily available in mountain huts. In Southern Norway, the bowls are usually called komler or komper, while people in Fjord Norway often call it potetballer, raspeballer, orkomler. Some people like potato dumplings served with molasses and crispy bacon, while others like them as a side dish with pork or lamb. In Norway, it's a tradition to serve a rape-patty every Thursday.

Kim Jong Un supervises 18-missile salvo, says it's warning for South Korea

Kim Jong Un observed a salvo of 18 missiles and said it was a warning to South Korea

North Korea said it practically launched 18 short-range ballistic missiles to demonstrate its willingness to launch a preemptive strike against South Korea's "terrorists." State media announced on Friday that the "government" would attack if necessary. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un launched a drill of multiple 600mm "super-large" rockets on Thursday, KCNA reported. The reports came after South Korea said it had detected at least 10 short-range ballistic missiles fired by North Korea off its east coast and that they could be offered to buyers including Russia.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un watched the demonstration at the launch site, where artillery successfully hit a target on an island 365 kilometers (227 miles) away, KCNA reported.

In the images published by the state media, 18 missiles, known by experts as KN-25, are seen rising into the air from a mobile phone.

The "huge" rocket, first tested in 2019, demonstrates the difference between multiple rocket launchers (MLRS) and short-range rockets, according to the International Center for Research and Research. North Korea says these missiles can be equipped with nuclear weapons.

It was stated that Kim Jong Un ordered North Korea's nuclear forces to prepare to wage war against military aggression and to lead in the event of war.

KCNA later announced in English that the "destructive fire" during the exercise showed that North Korea was willing to defend its country and respond to its enemies.

KCNA said the drill used the latest fire control, part of the government's nuclear arms control.

Thursday's announcement on the use of nuclear weapons was condemned by the US Department of Defense, which said it ignored and violated many UN Security Council resolutions.

Donald Trump found guilty

Donald Trump became the first U.S. president to be convicted of a crime on Thursday when a New York jury found him guilty of falsifying documents to cover up a payment to silence a porn star ahead of the 2016 election.

After two days of deliberation, the 12-member jury pronounced Trump guilty on all 34 felony counts he faced.

Trump watched the jurors dispassionately as they were polled to confirm the unanimous verdict.

Justice Juan Merchan set sentencing for July 11, just days before the Republican Party is scheduled to formally nominate Trump for president ahead of the Nov. 5 election.

The crime of falsifying business documents carries a maximum sentence of four years in prison, though those convicted often receive shorter sentences, fines or probation. Incarceration would not legally prevent him from campaigning, or taking office if he were to win.

Donald Trump’s lawyer in his hush money criminal trial argued to a New York jury that the former president is a victim of extortion, saying the case is rooted in an effort to squeeze him for money before the 2016 election.

Adult film star Stormy Daniels got the $130,000 payment to keep quiet about an alleged sexual encounter after her publicist and lawyer threatened to go public on the eve of the election, even though she’d previously denied the affair, Trump attorney Todd Blanche said during closing arguments Tuesday.

“This started out as an extortion, there’s no doubt about that, and it ended very well for Ms. Daniels," Blanche told the Manhattan jury as the former president and several family members watched.

He will meditate day and night at the same place where Swami Vivekanand did meditation, at the Dhyan Mandapam.

Ahead of his departure on June 1, Modi is likely to visit the Thiruvalluvar statue, next to the memorial. Both the memorial and statue were built on tiny islets, that are separate and mound-like rocky formations in the sea.

All arrangements, including heavy security, are in place for Modi’s 45-hour stay at the famed, mid-sea memorial, named after the revered Hindu saint.

How the verdict in the Trump hush money trial could impact the 2024 US presidential election

President Trump pleaded not guilty to 34 charges of falsifying business documents to conceal payments used to buy the silence of porn star Stormy Daniels just before the 2016 election.

The jury in the first criminal trial against a former US president began deliberations in the Donald Trump hush money trial on Wednesday, considering a verdict that could have far-reaching implications for the 2024 White House campaign.

President Trump has pleaded not guilty to 34 charges of falsifying business records to conceal payments used to buy the silence of porn star Stormy Daniels just before the 2016 election.

Daniels had threatened to go public with details of an alleged sexual encounter she had with President Trump in 2006, though Daniels denies the affair.

The New York case is widely considered the least serious of the four criminal cases against Trump. But it also means that the Republican presidential candidate has spent more time in court than on the campaign trail in recent weeks, drawing undue attention to the only case likely to go to trial before the Nov. 5 campaign against Democrat Joe Biden.

The three possible outcomes of the jury trial could therefore affect the presidential campaign.

Guilty

Polls suggest that a guilty verdict could pose a significant political threat to Trump in an election that could be decided by just tens of thousands of votes in a handful of battleground states.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll of registered voters conducted in April found that one in four Republicans would not vote for Trump if he were found guilty in criminal trial. In the same poll, 60% of independents said they would not vote for Trump if he was found guilty.

Republican and Democratic aides are divided over the impact of a guilty verdict.

Republican pollster Whit Ayers suspects that up to a quarter of Republicans would actually shun Trump if he were convicted. But Ayers said a guilty verdict could help Biden in a close election if a few moderate Republicans and independents are deterred.

But Ayers said the nature of the New York case, brought by Democratic prosecutors and relying on untested legal strategies, would help Trump and his Republican allies portray a guilty verdict as a political assassination.

"If Republicans wanted to design a trial that they could easily dismiss as a partisan witch hunt, they would design the very case being tried in New York," Ayers said.

Tricia McLaughlin, a Republican consultant who worked for Vivek Ramaswami's campaign, said she thought a guilty verdict would have a psychological effect on Trump because he hates to lose. She added that he would almost certainly appeal the guilty verdict, tying up even more financial resources for legal costs.

Bill Galston, an analyst and senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, a Washington think tank, said he doesn't expect a guilty verdict to have a big impact on the presidential election.

"Ultimately, this comes down to lies about sex. "I think the majority of Americans probably think everyone lies about sex," said Galston, who has worked on Democratic presidential campaigns. He also served in President Bill Clinton's administration at the end of his White House term. The 1990s were marked by sex scandals. Advisers across the political spectrum agree on one thing: An acquittal would be a major win for Trump, especially since he claims the trial was a sham political persecution. During the campaign, the candidate could use the New York acquittal to argue that other cases against him are also legally baseless, McLaughlin said. He faces federal and state charges for trying to overturn his election loss. Biden faced federal indictments in Florida in 2020 and in 2021 for misusing classified documents after leaving the White House. He has pleaded not guilty in all three cases.

"It's great fodder for him," McLaughlin said. "He will say, 'I won this sham trial, this witch hunt in New York, and that's what's going to happen with the other trials.'"

Reuters/Ipsos has not polled on how an acquittal would affect voters' views of the presidential race.

Karen Finney, a Democratic consultant who worked in the Clinton White House, said for Trump's core supporters "an acquittal will make them feel vindicated and validated."

But she said the lurid details that came out in trial testimony and the case's central allegation - that Trump arranged a hush money payment to a porn star - could still damage him even if jurors find him not guilty.

"What's come out during the case could turn off these suburban women that Trump still has a problem with," Finney said, although she said he would play an acquittal as a "huge victory."

The Biden campaign is preparing a statement to be issued after a verdict that will remind supporters that "the only way to beat Trump is at the ballot box," said an official familiar with the campaign's strategy.
