The hostages, among them several Americans, were taken on October 7, 2023, and officials indicate that about 100 are still held captive in Gaza. Nonetheless, there are fears that a number of them may have perished while in captivity. Trump made his comments during a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, where he underscored the critical nature of the situation. 

“Total chaos will ensue. If we do not have those hostages returned, I don’t want to disrupt your negotiations, but if they aren’t returned by the time I assume office, total chaos will ensue in the Middle East,” Trump stated. He is scheduled to be inaugurated as the 47th President of the United States on January 20. 

Trump’s comments came as a response to an inquiry about the current state of negotiations with Hamas regarding the release of American captives. Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steven Charles Witkoff, who has just come back from the area, expressed hope, mentioning that the talks were progressing well. “I believe we’re close to an agreement. I don’t want to delve into what has caused delays; there’s no value in being negative. But I think it’s the president’s standing, his expectations, and the boundaries he has established that are propelling this negotiation,” Witkoff noted.

More than 1,000 structures have been consumed by the fires that erupted around America’s second-largest city, displacing tens of thousands of individuals. The atmosphere remains dire, with a thick layer of smoke blanketing the area.

Preparations were made to issue 120,000 tokens to devotees for the "sarva darshan" (free darshan) of Lord Venkateswara Swamy during the initial three days of the yearly darshan occurring from January 10 to 12.

Tokens for the 10-day celebration were set to be distributed starting at 5 am on Thursday; however, many individuals began to gather the night before at counters established by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), which manages temple activities.

Distribution sites were established at 94 counters across three pilgrim lodges - Vishnu Nivasam, Srinivasam, and Bhudevi complexes, along with various other locations such as Satyanarayanapuram, Bairagipatteda, and Ramanaidu school in Tirupati, according to officials. Tirupati Municipal Commissioner N Moruya mentioned that the situation became uncontrollable at the counter set up at MGM High School in Bairagipatteda, close to the Vishnu Nivasam temple. Approximately 4,000 to 5,000 individuals surged to the counter starting Wednesday morning. By the evening, the crowd grew disorderly, resulting in pushing and shoving.

As per BR Naidu, the TTD chairman, the chaos erupted when a gate was opened to assist a woman who was feeling ill, prompting the crowd to rush forward simultaneously.

The inadequate measures to regulate the crowd led to a stampede on Wednesday night, causing the deaths of at least six devotees and leaving over 40 others injured.

The festival allows worshippers to offer prayers to the deity Lord Venkateswara from the northern entrance of the temple.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to those who have lost their "loved ones." Opposition Leader in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, called on Congress members to extend all possible assistance during this challenging time.

Today, outside the Delhi Chief Minister's home, dramatic events unfolded as leaders from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) arrived to "reveal the truth" concerning the BJP's "Sheeshmahal" allegations. 

In an effort to gain an advantage in the looming Delhi elections, the BJP has charged AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal with misusing taxpayer funds to lavishly renovate the bungalow located at 6, Flagstaff Road. To counter these claims, AAP announced that its representatives would take members of the media to the Civil Lines bungalow and then proceed to the Prime Minister's residence at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, to highlight the changes made there. 

Upon arrival at the bungalow with journalists in tow, AAP MP Sanjay Singh and Delhi minister Saurabh Bharadwaj were halted by the police, who cited a potential disruption to public order. Mr. Singh was seen in conversation with a senior police officer, questioning the reasoning behind their obstruction. He contended that preventing them from entering violated the rights of both an MP and a cabinet minister. 

"Why aren't we being permitted inside? The BJP is spreading falsehoods regarding a golden toilet, swimming pool, and minibar, so allow us to see them and let the media witness it too," Mr. Singh was heard stating. 

Mr. Bharadwaj questioned on whose authority they were being obstructed. "The only person above me is the Lieutenant Governor. Who instructed you to stop us?" 

"The BJP's deception is now evident; they have been indicated as the Bharatiya Jhootha Party. For months, they have claimed there is a golden toilet, swimming pool, and minibar at this Chief Minister's residence. We've brought you here today. Have you seen? They have deployed water cannons and a huge police presence for just two people. Are we considered terrorists? Why this blockade? This clearly indicates the BJP is lying. We will remain here for 10 minutes; if the BJP is honest, they should open up the Chief Minister's residence for us," Mr. Singh declared. 

Subsequently, the AAP representatives made their way to the Prime Minister's residence but were met with similar restrictions. 

The official residence of the Delhi Chief Minister has remained unoccupied since Mr. Kejriwal resigned after receiving bail in a corruption case associated with the now-repealed liquor policy. The AAP leader has stated he would reassume the role only following the "people's court" judgment. 

The BJP has consistently targeted AAP with "Sheeshmahal" taunts, and a report from the CAG has provided them with additional support. The document, submitted by Girish Chandra Murmu, who retired in November, highlighted a significant increase in costs between the initial budget for renovations and the eventual expenses. 

Leading the BJP's offensive, Prime Minister Narendra Modi remarked, "You will be astonished to learn that while Delhi residents were battling Covid, searching for oxygen and medicines, the AAP was focused on constructing Sheesh Mahal."
