A Delhi court has sought opinion from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on the bail application of Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal. The Supreme Court of India has granted interim bail till June 1 to the Delhi Chief Minister in the Delhi liquor policy scam case.

On Thursday, Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, appearing before the ED, rejected Arvind Kejriwal's bail application on the grounds that the Delhi Chief Minister is "healthy" enough to campaign in Punjab for the respective Lok Sabha elections. Special Judge Kaveri Baweja had directed the central investigating agencies to file their reply to Arvind Kejriwal's application by Saturday. The court set the next date for hearing as June 1.

Arvind Kejriwal Arrest Case: Important News

- Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal has sought regular bail in the Delhi Customs Policy Scam case. He has also applied for seven-day interim bail on medical grounds.

- Kejriwal has sought an extension of his interim bail for seven days to undergo a series of medical tests, including a PET-CT scan, citing "high kidney ketone levels and sudden unexplained weight loss". Serious heart disease and even cancer.

- The AAP leader is granted bail till June 1 following the Supreme Court order directing him to surrender on June 2. In his latest application dated May 26, Arvind Kejriwal said he will surrender before the jail authorities on June 9 instead of June 2 as originally scheduled. - The ED has rejected Kejriwal's bail application and said, "He (Arvind Kejriwal) is not in custody. He is campaigning in Punjab today." His health condition did not hinder his election campaign. He has postponed the deposit till the last day and we have very little time. His behaviour does not entitle him to any order today.

- A Delhi court has sought ED's opinion on regular bail for Arvind Kejriwal in a money laundering case linked to alleged tax evasion.

- A Delhi court has also sought ED's opinion on granting bail to CM Kejriwal on medical grounds in case regular bail is not applicable.

- The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday rejected a seven-day extension request for interim bail for Arvind Kejriwal in a corruption case linked to Delhi's liquor policy.

Lord Shiva does not need our protection, the Delhi High Court observed on Wednesday while allowing the demolition of the Shiva Temple located on Yamuna floodplain [Pracheen Shiv Mandir Avam Akhada Samiti v Delhi Development Authority and Ors].

Justice Dharmesh Sharma observed that it is “we, the people” who seek Lord Shiva’s protection and blessings and that Lord Shiva would be happier if Yamuna riverbed and floodplain is cleared of encroachments and illegal constructions.

“The half-hearted plea by the learned counsel for the petitioner that Lord Shiva, being the deity of the temple, must be also impleaded in the present matter is a desperate attempt to give an altogether different colour to the entire dispute to sub-serve the vested interest of its members. It goes without saying that Lord Shiva does not need our protection; rather, we, the people, seek his protection and blessings. There could be no iota of doubt that Lord Shiva would be happier if the Yamuna River bed and the flood plains areas are cleared of all encroachments and unauthorised construction,” the Bench said.

Justice Sharma also observed that merely because daily prayers are offered at a temple and special functions are held on certain festival days, it cannot be said that the temple in question is a place of public importance. The court made this observation while dismissing a petition filed by Prachen Shiv Mandir Avam Akhada Samiti challenging the Delhi Development Authority's (DDA) demolition order of Prachen Shiva Mandir (ancient Shiva temple) near the Taj enclave in Gita Colony.

The court, after examining the case, said there was no document to show that the temple was consecrated to the public and not a private temple managed by the petitioner association.

"In view of the aforesaid arguments, the present suit is dismissed. However, the petitioner association is given 15 days' time to remove the idols and other religious objects from the temple and install them in another temple. If this is not complied with, the respondent DDA will be directed to install the statue in another temple or the Religious Committee will be directed to give similar directions if suggestions are sought," the court said.

It further said that the DDA is free to demolish unauthorised constructions and the applicant society and its members shall not hinder or obstruct the demolition process.

"The local police and administration shall provide full support to the said process to maintain law and order," the court added.

Advocates Kamlesh Kumar Mishra, Renu, Shivani Verma and Dipak Raj Singh appeared as petitioners.

The DDA was represented by Additional Standing Counsel Arjun Pant and its advocate Latika Malhotra.

The Delhi government was represented by Additional Standing Counsel (Civil) Mehar Nakra and advocates Devansh Solanki and Aditi Kapoor.

Witness credibility questioned in Donald Trump's hush money case as jury deliberates without needing his testimony.

Former US President Donald Trump just sat back and listened to the New York hush money case judge as he began instructing the jury on what could potentially be detrimental to his defence.

Judge Juan Merchan, directing the jury, said that while the prosecution is required to prove the case against Trump, it cannot be legally argued that Trump must testify for the jury to determine whether he is guilty or not beyond a “reasonable doubt.”

Merchan clarified that the jury does not need to agree on what specific crime Trump allegedly attempted to conceal by falsifying documents.

While listening to instructions from within the courtroom, Ukraine-born George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley remarked, “Merchan just delivered the coup de grace instruction.”

Merchan said that the jurors “can disagree on what the crime was among the three choices” suggested by the prosecutors, Turley stated these as violation of tax laws, other business records and the Federal Election Campaign Act. “Thus, this means that they could split 4-4-4 and he will still treat them as unanimous,” he further said.

Michael Cohen's testimony needs confirmation, judge tells jury.

Marchan noted that the jury would need to reach a unanimous decision on each charge of falsifying business records, but legal scholars in the room agreed that there didn't seem to be much room for a split verdict or for Trump to be found guilty or convicted. Not guilty.

"It's either 34 guilty verdicts, 34 not guilty verdicts, or the jury doesn't agree," former federal prosecutor Trey Gowdy said.

"I can't imagine a verdict that would convict on some counts and acquit on others." Marchan defined the concept of reasonable doubt for the jury to use in the trial, explaining: "It is knowable without a degree of uncertainty," but "not sufficient to conclude that the defendant is probably guilty."

The judge also addressed witnesses called by the prosecution in the case, including Michael Cohen, the former president and attorney accused of falsifying business records and misappropriating $130,000 meant for payments to porn star Stormy Daniels.

Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff said that "unidentified objects believed to be North Korean propaganda leaflets have been identified in the Gyeonggi-Gangwon border area and the military is taking action".

"Citizens should refrain from outdoor activities, do not come into contact with any unknown objects, and report them to the nearest military base or police," it said in a statement sent to AFP.

It said that the North's actions "clearly violate international laws and seriously threaten the safety of our people," saying some of the balloons had contained suspected trash, which the military was checking.

Major Radhika Sen, who served with the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Democratic Republic of Congo, will be honoured with the prestigious 2023 Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award. The UN award is an acknowledgement of her remarkable efforts and advocacy for the rights of women and girls during her tenure as a peacekeeper.

The award also recognises her efforts in line with the 2000 Security Council resolution aimed at protecting women and girls from conflict-related sexual violence. The ceremony will take place on the International Day of UN Peacekeepers. 

Who is Radhika Sen?

1. Born in Himachal Pradesh, Radhika Sen initially pursued a career in biotechnology engineering. She was in the middle of her master's degree at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay when she decided to join the Indian Army.

2. Ms Sen was assigned to the MONUSCO (United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo) in 2023. She served as the Engagement Platoon Commander with the Indian Rapid Deployment Battalion till April 2024.

3. Radhika Sen is the second Indian peacekeeper to receive the Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award. Before Ms Sen, Major Suman Gawani was recognised for her service with the UN Mission in South Sudan. She was honoured in 2019.

4. Among the 6,063 Indian personnel deployed in UN peacekeeping operations, Ms Sen served alongside 1,954 individuals within MONUSCO, of which 32 were women. Her work created safe spaces for women to unite and discuss issues.

5. Ms Sen led peacekeeping efforts in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) with a focus on gender equality, according to the UN. She organised programs like English classes for kids and health and vocational training for adults. Ms Sen also established Community Alert Networks, aiding conflict-affected communities in North Kivu.
