 25 Journalists of NewsClick Interrogated for the Second Time, Editor and HR Will Appear in Court on Tuesday





New Delhi, October 10, 2023: The Delhi Police Special Cell has questioned about 25 journalists and contributors of the NewsClick portal for the second time in connection with a UAPA case registered against the online news portal for allegedly peddling an "anti-national" agenda in the country.

The interrogation began on Monday and continued on Tuesday. The journalists were questioned about their work for NewsClick and their sources. Some of the journalists were also asked about their personal opinions on the Indian government and its policies.

The editor-in-chief of NewsClick, Prabir Purkayastha, and the portal's human resources head, Amit Chakravarty, were arrested on October 3. They are currently in judicial custody and will appear in court on Tuesday.

The NewsClick portal has been critical of the Indian government on a number of issues, including the Citizenship Amendment Act, the National Register of Citizens, and the government's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Delhi Police has said that it is investigating NewsClick for alleged violations of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The UAPA is a controversial law that has been used by the government to crack down on dissent.

The interrogation of the NewsClick journalists and the arrest of the portal's editor-in-chief have raised concerns about the freedom of the press in India. A number of journalists and human rights groups have condemned the police action, calling it an attempt to muzzle dissent.
