raeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Friday the Gaza war would not end until the "elimination" of Hamas's capacity to govern and make war, after US President Joe Biden said Israel had offered a new peace roadmap.

"The prime minister authorised the negotiating team to present an outline for achieving (the return of hostages), while insisting that the war will not end until all of its goals are achieved, including the return of all our hostages and the elimination of Hamas' military and governmental capabilities," Netanyahu's office said in a statement.

"The exact outline proposed by Israel, including the conditional transition from stage to stage, allows Israel to maintain these principles," it added. "It's time to end this war and start the next day," Biden said in a televised address from the White House, adding that "we must not let this moment slip away" to seize any chance for peace.

The Gaza war was sparked by a Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7 and has left 1,189 people dead, most of them civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures. Militants also held 252 hostages, 121 of whom remain in Gaza, including 37 who the military says were killed.

It was exactly 131 years ago, on May 31, 1893, that Swami Vivekananda, originally Narendra Dutta, travelled to Chicago to deliver his famous speech. At the World Parliament of Religions, he surprised many by calling the delegates "my brothers and sisters". Prime Minister Narendra Modi has frequently used the phrase "mere parivarjan" since his Independence Day speech in 2023.

131 years ago, Swami Vivekananda meditated at this stone monument now named after the saint. Mr. Modi will also meditate there for two days, at the end of a long election campaign, as if he is preparing for something bigger and grander. The similarities are striking and numerous, but we will focus on three powerful images that emerged from Kanyakumari and the messages embedded in them.

Saffron symbolism

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is known to be unapologetic when it comes to showcasing his faith. Be it taking part in religious activities ahead of the inauguration of the new Parliament building or the consecration of the Ram Mandir. He often bathes in the holy river and wears saffron clothing. This time in Kanyakumari, saffron is the colour for two days only. Both his kurta and dhoti were dark saffron and he also wrapped himself in a saffron shawl to highlight how comfortable he is with the colour.

This is not a political event, but the message is loud and clear. The Prime Minister supports "Sab ka Vikas" but as a private citizen, he remains a staunch Hindu, whatever the Opposition may like or dislike.

PM Modi considers the colour as the colour of sacrifice. In 2010, when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat and the then UPA government at the Centre coined the term "saffron terror", PM Modi vehemently said, "It was the young sannyasi Vivekananda, clad in saffron, who raised India's profile in the international community".

Is this sacrifice of tapasvis like Vivekananda part of the Congress government's tradition of saffron terror?"

Hamas would release "a large number" of hostages, including women, elderly and wounded, captured in the Israeli attack on October 7. The bodies of the killed hostages would also be handed over. American hostages being held by Hamas would also be released, Biden said, adding "we want to bring them home." Hundreds of Palestinian prisoners would be released in return.

Palestinian civilians will be allowed to return to their "homelands and neighborhoods" throughout the Gaza Strip, including the northern part, which has been ravaged by months of Israeli shelling. Humanitarian aid will "increase" to 600 trucks per day arriving in Gaza, and the international community will provide hundreds of thousands of emergency shelters and housing units.

In the first six-week phase, Israel and Hamas will "negotiate the agreements necessary to move to the second phase, which would mean a permanent cessation of hostilities."

Biden said the ceasefire would also be extended as negotiations continue, with the United States, Egypt and Qatar acting as mediators to try to ensure its continuation.

Second Phase

In the second phase of the plan, which will last about another six weeks, Israeli forces will withdraw completely from Gaza.

Hamas will release "all surviving hostages," including Israeli male soldiers. This has been a key sticking point for Hamas in the past.

If both sides comply with the agreement, it would result in a "permanent cessation of hostilities," Biden said, citing an Israeli proposal. Phase 3
