Comparison of Israel's Layered Missile Defense Systems with the Iranian Arsenal

Comparison of Israel's Layered Missile Defense Systems with the Iranian Arsenal

Comparison of Israel's Layered Missile Defense Systems with the Iranian Arsenal

Iran's Shahab-3 ballistic missile, boasting a range of 2,000 km, poses a significant threat to Israel's security. Iran utilized various types of weaponry to launch attacks on Israel on Tuesday night, including ballistic and cruise missiles as well as drones. These weapons have previously been employed to target different regions within the area. It is estimated that approximately 200 ballistic missiles were launched by Iran on Tuesday night. Let us examine this closely. Iran currently possesses a 300-kilometer range missile known as the Shahab-1. This is a short-range missile that lacks the capability to reach Israel. The missile is capable of targeting areas located at a considerable distance from Israel. The Fateh missile, on the other hand, has a range of 300 to 500 km. Once again, the first missile lacks the necessary range to reach Israel.

The Shahab 2 missile, on the other hand, has a longer range of 500 km but still falls short of reaching Israeli targets.

Only the Zolfaghar missile has the capability to possibly reach Israel. This missile has a range of 700 km, allowing it to potentially target areas in Israel. Additionally, the Qiam-1 missile has a range of 750 km, exceeding that of the Shahab-2 by 50 km. The missile in question is of a more advanced nature, capable of targeting additional areas within Israel but not penetrating deep into the country.

However, the Shahab-3, with a range of 2,000 km, has the capability to effectively strike all of Israel. It has the potential to impact multiple regions in the area. The missile under discussion may have been utilized in the recent attacks on Tuesday. Israel possesses advanced ballistic missile defense systems. It is a hierarchical defense mechanism that was evidently penetrated last evening. Videos have captured Iranian missiles striking Tel Aviv. Iran has also published footage depicting the launch of ballistic missiles from its land. The extent of their accuracy and the possibility of impacts from intercepted fragments remain unclear. When discussing Israeli surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) used in defense, it is important to consider the range and altitude at which these interceptor missiles operated to neutralize Iranian ballistic missiles. To begin, let us examine Israel's Arrow system. It is a component of a system, thus the terms missile and system are utilized interchangeably.

When discussing SAM systems, it is important to consider their range and altitude capabilities. Israel's Arrow system, for example, is designed to intercept incoming ballistic missiles in the exosphere, which is located just outside the atmosphere. The range of the response that will be generated falls between 2,000 and 2,400 kilometers. The system can reach an impressive altitude of up to 100 km, making it possibly the most advanced in its class globally. Other systems may have been utilized to intercept Iranian missiles last night. Let us now examine the following system, known as David's Sling. It is capable of flying up to a distance of 300 km and reaching an altitude of approximately 15 kilometers for interception purposes. Lastly, the focus of discussion centers around the Iron Dome. It is a missile system with a relatively short range. When discussing Israel's capabilities, the Iron Dome system is often highlighted as a key component.

The Iron Dome is integrated into the comprehensive missile defense system as the final layer of protection. The aircraft is capable of reaching an altitude of 10 kilometers and can travel up to a distance of approximately 70 kilometers. It is not ideal for intercepting ballistic missiles. The system is more capable of intercepting short-range rockets such as those launched by Hamas and Hezbollah. It is evident that some breaches have occurred in the system. However, numerous lives have been spared, with the predominant impact reportedly occurring at Israeli military installations.

Israel is said to be considering a potential strike on Iran's nuclear facilities

Israel is said to be considering a potential strike on Iran's nuclear facilities, a move which US President Joe Biden has discouraged, emphasizing the need for a proportionate response. Biden expressed his opposition to Israel taking action against Iran's nuclear and oil sites during a period of heightened tensions in the Middle East. Instead, he urged Israel to act in a measured and proportionate manner. In response to reports of Israel's intentions to target Iran's nuclear facilities following missile attacks from Tehran, Biden acknowledged Israel's right to self-defense but emphasized the importance of proportionality in any response, as reported by The Times of Israel.

He also engaged with G7 leaders regarding the potential implementation of fresh sanctions against Tehran. Following the virtual G7 meeting, the White House announced that Biden had orchestrated the collaborative enforcement of the additional sanctions targeting Iran. The G7 leaders, including Biden, firmly denounced Iran's assault on Israel, signaling a significant increase in tensions in the Middle East.

LATEST ON ISRAEL-IRAN CONFLICT:

Biden announced plans for additional sanctions against Iran in response to the recent attacks on Israel, and expressed intention to communicate with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promptly. When questioned about Israel's potential strike on Iran's nuclear and oil installations, Biden firmly replied, "No." Analysts predict that Israel's retaliation would be harsher than Iran's previous missile and drone attacks in April, indicating a possible focus on Tehran's nuclear or oil infrastructure. Other experts suggested that the United States should intervene to limit Israel's reaction in order to prevent a potential regional conflict in the Middle East. Biden reaffirmed his intention to communicate with Israel, including Netanyahu, regarding its proposed attack on Iran, citing that Tehran's actions have strayed significantly from expected behavior.

He stated that discussions would be held with Israeli officials regarding their intended course of action, with all seven G7 nations concurring that Israel has the right to respond to Iran's missile attacks, emphasizing the need for a proportional response. Israeli authorities informed their US counterparts in Washington that they were still in the process of determining targets and the timing of their response. The recent escalation of tension in the Middle East, attributed to Iran's missile attack and Israel's offensive in Lebanon against Hezbollah, has put the Biden administration on high alert as they work towards brokering a ceasefire deal in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. Israeli officials have indicated that potential targets of an Israeli response to Iran may include strategic infrastructure such as gas and oil rigs, as well as nuclear facilities.

Axios reported that possible responses could include attacks on Iran's air defense systems and targeted killings. Should such a plan proceed, it has the potential to spark further conflict between the two nations and significantly damage the Iranian economy. On Wednesday, six medical professionals were casualties of two Israeli airstrikes in central Beirut. The attacks targeted a Hezbollah-affiliated Islamic rescue center, resulting in the destruction of the building, as reported by Lebanon's National News Agency.

The apartment building in Bashoura neighbourhood was struck by a drone, near the Lebanese parliament, marking the closest Israeli strikes to the country's seat of government. Hezbollah conducted two drone attacks in central Israel on Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, with no injuries reported. The IDF reported targeting two hostile aircraft, while a third aircraft landed in an open area near the Tel Aviv suburb of Bat Yam, as per The Times of Israel. Israel and Hezbollah have intensified their attacks on each other in response to Israel's ground offensive in Lebanon, which was prompted by the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in a significant airstrike on the group's headquarters in Beirut the previous week.

Earlier on Tuesday, eight Israeli soldiers lost their lives in Lebanon amid the ground offensive. Meanwhile, Israeli forces conducted a strike on a weapons storage facility in the Jableh countryside of Syria and additional targets in coastal cities in the western region of the country, as reported by the state media of Israel on Thursday, according to The Jerusalem Post.

Following Iran's missile strike on Israel, the US issued a warning of "severe consequences." Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denounced the attack, labeling it as a significant error by Iran and cautioning Tehran that there will be repercussions. The missile attack, which consisted of 181 ballistic missiles launched by Iran on Tuesday night, led to the activation of air raid sirens across the nation and the evacuation of nearly 10 million Israelis into bomb shelters. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have announced that a significant number of the missiles were successfully intercepted by the nation's advanced missile defense systems, such as the Iron Dome and Arrow systems. Multiple projectiles successfully breached the defense shield, resulting in minimal damage and minor injuries.

Immediate Action

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denounced the assault, asserting that Iran had committed a significant error and cautioning Tehran of repercussions.

This missile barrage marks the second deliberate strike on Israel by Iran in the current year, subsequent to a comparable offensive in April that was promptly thwarted by Israeli and allied defenses. Tuesday's strikes, as per Iranian officials, were carried out in response to the recent deaths of senior Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Israeli military actions. Guy Nir, spokesperson for the Israeli embassy in India, stated in an exclusive interview with TV that Tehran can expect a fitting reply. Mr. Nir told TV that if Ayatollah Ali Khamenei decides to start a comprehensive war with Israel, it would be a miscalculation for Iran. Israel's reaction will be strategic and targeted, rather than a large-scale war. "I believe neither party desires that outcome."

Iran's Ambassador to India, Iraj Elahi, cautioned that Iran will "launch another attack on Israel" unless Israel reduces tensions in the region. Mr. Elahi informed TV that if the current leader, considered by some as the Hitler of our era (Netanyahu), ceases his acts of brutality and aggression, his nation will be able to avoid the repercussions. US Warning Of Severe Consequences

In reaction to the attack, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan delivered a strong message to Iran, emphasizing that the missile strike signified a major escalation and would result in serious repercussions. Speaking at a press briefing in the White House, Sullivan assured that the US would stand with Israel and back any responsive actions.
