Joe Biden Denounces Russia's "Appalling" Assault On Ukraine To Disrupt Electricity

On Wednesday, U.S. President Joe Biden denounced the strikes by missiles and drones carried out by Russia on Ukraine, reinforcing the unwavering support of the United States for Ukraine.

On Wednesday, U.S. President Joe Biden denounced the missile and drone attacks by Russia on Ukraine, reaffirming the unwavering backing from the United States for Ukraine.

Additionally, he announced that the U.S. Department of Defense would enhance the supply of weapons to Ukraine and urged the global community to unite in solidarity with the nation.

"In the early hours of Christmas, Russia initiated a series of missile and drone strikes on Ukrainian urban centers and vital energy infrastructure. The intent of this appalling assault was to deprive the Ukrainian populace of access to heating and electricity throughout the winter months and to jeopardize the security of its energy grid," Biden stated in a declaration.

"Let me clarify: the people of Ukraine have the right to live in safety and peace, and both the United States and the global community must persist in supporting Ukraine until it prevails against Russia's acts of aggression," he added.

In his statement, Joe Biden emphasized the U.S. defense assistance provided to Ukraine and how this country will persist in bolstering Ukraine's defenses against Russia. "In the past few months, the United States has supplied Ukraine with hundreds of air defense missiles, and additional supplies are forthcoming. I have instructed the Department of Defense to maintain its ramp-up of weapon deliveries to Ukraine, and the United States will not cease its efforts to bolster Ukraine’s position in its defense against Russian military actions," he stated further.

Earlier on Christmas Day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned Russia for executing a significant missile and drone assault during the Christmas festivities, which targeted Ukraine's energy infrastructure and labeled the attack as "inhumane."

Russia executed an extensive missile strike targeting Ukraine’s energy framework, leading the nation’s grid operator to curtail electricity supplies on Christmas Day.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy reported via Telegram on Wednesday that the strike from Moscow encompassed 70 missiles, with a portion being ballistic, alongside over 100 assault drones. Separately, Russia disclosed it had intercepted 59 Ukrainian drones overnight across multiple regions.

Ukraine’s power grid operator, Ukrenergo, imposed electricity restrictions as a precautionary action, based on another post on Telegram. Energy Minister German Galushchenko indicated that this measure was essential to “reduce the adverse impacts on the energy system.”

In the eastern region of Kharkiv, approximately 500,000 residents have been left without heating, as stated by Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba, according to RBC Ukraine.

Twenty-five individuals emerged alive from the incident and have been transported to a medical facility, with five being placed in critical care

According to the Emergencies Ministry of Kazakhstan, an Azerbaijan Airlines passenger aircraft ignited after it crashed in proximity to the city of Aktau.

The Embraer 190 aircraft was traveling from Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, to Grozny in the Chechen Republic of Russia, but its course was altered owing to fog in Grozny. There were sixty-two passengers aboard along with five members of the crew. "As per preliminary details, there are 28 individuals who survived, of which 22 have been sent to the hospital," the ministry mentioned via Telegram.

Footage depicted the plane swiftly descending and beginning to bank to the right side. It collided with an open area and caught fire. The incident occurred not far from the airport. Reports indicate that the aircraft made several loops while requesting an emergency landing but ultimately experienced a stall before crashing.

According to information from the Kazakh transport ministry, among the passengers on the aircraft, 37 were from Azerbaijan, six hailed from Kazakhstan, three were from Kyrgyzstan, and 16 were from Russia, as reported by AFP.

Prior to the crash, the aircraft emitted a distress signal as it encountered a flock of birds and a malfunction in its steering mechanism. The pilots attempted to accelerate and gain altitude until the very last moment, but the controls entirely failed.

Another video captured the aircraft's efforts to climb. It ascended quickly but soon began to stall. Subsequently, the pilot attempted to manipulate the aircraft to ascend. The craft then circled in the vicinity of the airport before ultimately crashing.
