New Orleans Incident Highlights Islamic State Resurgence Efforts
Assailant in New Orleans Motivated by Islamic State Ideology
WASHINGTON, - An individual, a veteran of the U.S. Army, displayed a black Islamic State flag on a vehicle before driving it into New Year's celebrants in New Orleans. This occurrence illustrates that the radical organization maintains the capability to incite violence, despite experiencing significant setbacks from a coalition of U.S. military forces over the years.
During its peak from 2014 to 2017, the Islamic State "caliphate" inflicted violence, including executions and torture, on populations across extensive regions of Iraq and Syria, while establishing various affiliates throughout the Middle East.
The group's former commander, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who was killed in 2019 by U.S. special operations in northwestern Syria, transitioned from relative anonymity to head the extremist organization and asserted himself as the "caliph" for all Muslims.
The caliphate disintegrated in 2017 in Iraq, where it had once operated from a location just a 30-minute journey from Baghdad, followed by its collapse in Syria in 2019, after a prolonged military offensive led by the U.S.
In response, the Islamic State fragmented into independent cells, with its leadership functioning in secrecy and its total numbers remaining difficult to assess. The United Nations approximates their figures to be around 10,000 within their core regions. The U.S.-led coalition, comprising approximately 4,000 American troops stationed in Syria and Iraq, has persistently targeted the militants through air bombardments and ground operations, which the U.S. military reports have resulted in numerous fighters and commanders being killed or captured.
Nevertheless, the Islamic State has executed significant operations while attempting to regroup, and it continues to motivate isolated attacks, exemplified by the incident in New Orleans that resulted in the deaths of 14 individuals.
China designates Ladakh region in two newly formed counties, prompting protests from India
China designates Ladakh region in two newly formed counties, prompting protests from India
This development occurs several months following the successful disengagement between Indian and Chinese forces at Demchok and Depsang in Eastern Ladakh.
On Friday, India announced that it has formally expressed a "serious protest" to China via diplomatic means regarding the creation of two new counties in the Hotan region, given that parts of these territories are situated within the Union territory of Ladakh.
India has consistently rejected the unlawful Chinese claims over Indian land in this area. "We have noted the announcement concerning the formation of two additional counties in China's Hotan Prefecture. Portions of the jurisdiction of these purported counties encroach on India's Union Territory of Ladakh," quoted Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the ministry of external affairs.
The recent situation arises months after the disengagement was finalized between Indian and Chinese forces at Demchok and Depsang in Eastern Ladakh.
India criticizes China's initiative to construct a dam on the Brahmaputra
Following China's declaration of its intentions to build a large dam on the Brahmaputra River in Tibet, New Delhi stated that it will keep a close watch and take appropriate actions to safeguard its interests.
"We will keep monitoring the situation and take the necessary steps to protect our interests," said the MEA spokesperson. "As a downstream nation with established rights to the river's waters, we have consistently conveyed our opinions and concerns regarding major projects on rivers within Chinese territory through both expert-level conversations and diplomatic discussions," Jaiswal stated.
"These concerns have been reiterated, highlighting the importance of transparency and dialogue with downstream nations, particularly following the most recent report," he added.

Motivation for soldier's Cybertruck suicide bombing disclosed: ‘Aimed to clear my mind’
Livelsberger, a former Green Beret in the U.S. Army, carried out a suicide bombing in Las Vegas, allegedly motivated by conspiracy theories along with emotional turmoil.
Matthew Livelsberger, a recognized soldier in the U.S. Army Special Forces, has been named as the individual behind the suicide bombing that involved a Tesla Cybertruck outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas.
As investigations proceed, findings suggest that Livelsberger’s background and a concerning conspiracy theory related to Chinese drones may have contributed to this tragic event.
Matthew Livelsberger’s anti-China views
As reported by the NY Post, there is substantial evidence revealing that the special forces veteran authored a manifesto in which he accused the U.S. government of working with China to create perilous drones. He characterized these drones as “the gravest threat to national security” and asserted they possessed “gravity manipulation technology, rendering them difficult to detect.”

In addition to leaving notes and a manifesto, he stated that his actions were not a terrorist act, but rather a frantic effort to “cleanse” his mind of the emotional weight he had been shouldering.

The recent opening of newly built apartments signifies the conclusion of the second effective In-Situ Slum Rehabilitation Project by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA).
Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi formally opened 1,675 apartments designated for 'Jhuggi - Jhopri' (JJ) clusters along with two urban redevelopment initiatives within the capital city. During the event, the Prime Minister also took a jab at AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal and the official residence of Delhi's Chief Minister.
"The nation is well aware that Modi has not constructed a home for his own use, but has facilitated the building of over 4 crore homes for those in need; 'mai bhi koi sheeshmahal bana sakta tha' (I too could have created a Sheeshmahal)," stated PM Modi at the gathering, referencing the recent accusations concerning extravagant spending on the residence of the Chief Minister of Delhi.
This remark pointed to an inventory disclosed in October by the Public Works Department (PWD), which listed premium appliances and gadgets allegedly valued at crores that were set up in the Chief Minister's bungalow. This issue has turned into a significant political dispute between the BJP and AAP.
"In these past 10 years, Delhi has been engulfed in 'aapada' (disaster). A few 'kattar beimaan' (highly dishonest) individuals, using Anna Hazare as a front, have led Delhi into 'aapada'. 'AAP has come down upon Delhi like a disaster'," PM Modi commented.
"Currently, India stands as a beacon of political and economic stability. This role will only grow stronger by 2025. This forthcoming year will mark a critical period for elevating India's global standing. It will be the moment for establishing India as one of the leading manufacturing hubs on the planet," he continued.
On his X account, PM Modi previously expressed that this is a significant moment for the progress of Delhi.
"Today signifies a vital moment for the development of Delhi. At an event in Ashok Vihar, I will be inaugurating and laying the groundwork for various development initiatives that will enhance the 'Ease of Living' for the residents of Delhi," he declared.
The recent opening of newly constructed flats marked the end of the second successful In-Situ Slum Rehabilitation Project by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA).
PM Modi presented keys to eligible recipients of EWS flats at Swabhiman Apartments located in the Ashok Vihar region.
For every 25 lakh rupees allocated for flat construction by the central government, the eligible recipients contribute less than seven percent of the total expenses, which includes a nominal fee of 1.42 lakh rupees and 30,000 rupees for five years of maintenance.
