'Voting is the initial move in constructing a nation': Gyanesh Kumar steps in as Chief Election Commissioner

Gyanesh Kumar, an auxiliary IAS official from the Kerala branch, who has served as an Election Commissioner since March 15, 2024, took over the role of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) on Wednesday.

Kumar takes over from Rajiv Kumar, who concluded his term on Tuesday after serving for four and a half years in the Election Commission. Vivek Joshi, the former chief secretary of Haryana, also assumed his role as an Election Commissioner, taking the position left vacant by Gyanesh Kumar’s advancement to CEC.

Upon assuming his new role, Kumar remarked: “Voting is the first step in nation building. Thus, every individual in India who has reached the age of 18 must register as a voter and participate in elections. In line with the Constitution of India, as well as the electoral laws, regulations, and directives released within it, the Election Commission has been, is, and will always stand by the electorate.”
