Union domestic minister Amit Shah on Wednesday said the United national Liberation front, the oldest militant group of Manipur, signed a peace agreement with the Centre.

             

“A historical milestone completed!!! Modi govt’s relentless efforts to set up everlasting peace in the Northeast have brought a brand new chapter of fulfilment as the United national Liberation the front (UNLF) signed a peace agreement, these days in New Delhi,” Shah stated in an X (formerly Twitter) publish.

“UNLF, the oldest valley-based totally armed group of Manipur has agreed to renounce violence and be a part of the mainstream. I welcome them to the democratic approaches and want them all of the great of their adventure on the path of peace and development,” the house minister added.

The peace agreement passed off days after the UNLF along with several different extremist corporations changed into banned by means of the Ministry of home Affairs (MHA). The choice become taken after the Centre felt those enterprises are indulging in assaults on and killing of security forces, police and civilians in Manipur, in addition to activities prejudicial to the sovereignty and integrity of India.

What is UNLF?

Founded on November 24, 1964 underneath Areambam Samrendra Singh, the UNLF is the oldest Meitei rebel institution within the north-eastern country of Manipur.
