Brazil’s Highest Court supports prohibition on Elon Musk’s X without dissent
The ban on Elon Musk's social media platform, X, was unanimously confirmed by Brazil's Supreme Court after it was initially put in place by Justice Alexandre de Moraes a week ago. The prohibition was put into effect following X's failure to meet a court-ordered deadline to appoint a legal representative in Brazil by the specified date of September 3rd.
Monday saw all five justices of the Supreme Court examine and affirm the prohibition. Justice Flavio Dino and Justice Cristiano Zanin underscored the importance of businesses following the laws of the land they operate in, stating that not abiding by court rulings weakens the legal system. Justices Carmen Lucia and Luiz Fux also backed the judgment, resulting in a unanimous verdict.
The suspension has additionally moved forward to create a confrontation between de Moraes and Musk's satellite internet supplier Starlink, which is declining to implement the judge's ruling.
"He broke the Brazilian constitution multiple times and in a shocking manner, despite taking an oath to defend it," Musk stated before the vote, hurling a slew of insults and allegations following the panel's decision. On Sunday, Musk revealed the development of an X account designed to release the sealed rulings of the justice system, which he claimed would demonstrate their defiance of Brazilian regulations.
The highest court has instructed telecommunication companies to restrict entry to X, and the prohibition will persist until the website fulfills the court’s requests and pays penalties surpassing USD 3 million. Moraes's initial decision censured Musk, branding him as a "lawbreaker" who spreads false information and weakens democratic systems.
