PM Modi's Historic Visit To Brunei

PM Modi's groundbreaking trip to Brunei aims to enhance collaboration in the fields of space and defense.

PM Modi's trip to Brunei happens approximately a decade after he initially encountered the Sultan of Hassanal Bolkiah in November 2014 during the 25th ASEAN Summit in Myanmar. They encountered once more at the 2017 East Asia Summit that took place in the Philippines.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to become the inaugural Indian Prime Minister to make an official trip to Brunei on September 3 and 4 for talks with Bruneian leaders. This is being viewed as a pivotal move in strengthening relations between the two countries.

PM Modi is set to travel to Brunei on September 3-4 as per an invitation from His Majesty Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah. This is going to be the inaugural bilateral trip by an Indian Prime Minister to Brunei," as announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during the special press conference discussing the Prime Minister's upcoming visit.

Prime Minister Modi's trip aligns with the 40th anniversary of the initiation of diplomatic relations between India and Brunei.

PM Modi was originally set to participate in the sixth meeting of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) in Bangkok on September 3 and 4, but the event was postponed due to the recent formation of the new government in the country.

PM Modi's trip to Brunei occurs around a decade following his initial encounter with Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah in November 2014 during the 25th ASEAN Summit in Myanmar. They crossed paths once more at the 2017 East Asia Summit hosted in the Philippines.

In July, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar held a meeting with his Brunei counterpart in Laos during the ASEAN gatherings. In honor of the four decades of diplomatic ties, the pair also unveiled a collaborative emblem.

The primary objective of PM Modi's visit is to strengthen economic relations, and boost collaboration in the aerospace and military industries. India already possesses numerous accords with Brunei in the realm of space, as well as a telemetry station established in the nation. The Prime Minister's visit will assist in enhancing collaboration in this area, as per the statement from the Ministry of External Affairs.

India and Brunei are seeking to strengthen their relationship in the field of energy security, particularly focusing on crude oil and hydrocarbons.

Currently, India brings in crude oil worth $270 million from Brunei. Brunei has also been a significant player in strengthening ties between India and ASEAN by serving as the Country Coordinator for India from 2012 to 2015. Brunei has backed India's 'Act East Policy'.

The Ministry of External Affairs stated that they are currently in talks with Brunei to establish a collaborative task force on defense.
