'Inaccurate, Mischievous': India Dismisses Claims of Defence Exports Diverted to Ukraine
The Ministry of External Affairs rejected reports alleging Indian defence exports were diverted to Ukraine and deemed them as 'speculative and misleading'. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that the report insinuated India's violation of international rules, which he described as 'inaccurate and mischievous', emphasizing that no violations had occurred. The Reuters report has been reviewed. The information is conjectural and deceptive. "It implies violations by India, where none exist and, hence, is inaccurate and mischievous,” Jaiswal stated, according to a press release by the ministry.
He further emphasized that India has a flawless record of adhering to international regulations concerning the export of military and dual-use items.
“India has an impeccable track record of compliance with international obligations on the export of military and dual use items." India has been conducting its defense exports in compliance with its international non-proliferation obligations, guided by its strong legal and regulatory framework. This framework encompasses a comprehensive evaluation of various criteria, such as end user responsibilities and certifications. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a response following a Reuters report alleging that Indian-made artillery shells have been rerouted to Ukraine by European purchasers. The report indicates that the transfer has been in progress for more than a year, aimed at bolstering Ukraine's defense against Russia. India has refrained from interfering with the trade, despite objections from Russia. According to Reuters, who cited two unidentified government sources and two sources in the defense industry, only a small portion of the ammunition supplied to Ukraine has been manufactured by India. One official estimated the percentage of total arms imported by Kyiv since the war began to be less than 1%.
