One nation, one election’ plan on agenda for current term of NDA

Sources have indicated that the concept of 'One Nation, One Election' mentioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Independence Day speech will be realized during the current tenure of the government. The government is dedicated to implementing this proposal, which has long been deliberated in the parliament. According to sources, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted this initiative in his Independence Day address this year and the government is dedicated to its execution.

A committee led by former President Ramnath Kovind has been established by the government and has presented its findings. The panel has proposed holding simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies initially, with synchronized local body polls to follow within 100 days. It is anticipated that the Law Commission will soon endorse this approach. The Commission is expected to propose concurrent elections for Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and local bodies such as municipalities and panchayats from 2029, with provisions for a unity government in cases of a hung house or no-confidence motion.

The concept of One Country One Election, which has been under deliberation in parliamentary circles for some time, is set to be realized during the present tenure of the Narendra Modi government, according to sources. According to sources, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted this initiative in his Independence Day address this year, emphasizing the government's dedication to its implementation. A committee, led by former President Ramnath Kovind, has been established by the government and has already presented its findings. The panel suggests conducting simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies initially, followed by synchronized local body polls within 100 days. It is anticipated that the Law Commission will also endorse this recommendation in the near future. The Commission is expected to propose synchronized elections for Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and local bodies such as municipalities and panchayats from 2029 onwards, along with provisions for a coalition government in situations of a hung house or a vote of no confidence.

In his address on Independence Day last month, Prime Minister Modi strongly advocated for "One nation, one election", arguing that frequent elections were impeding the country's progress. "The nation must strive towards 'one nation, one election'," he stated.

The BJP had also included "One Nation One Election" in its manifesto, with government sources expressing optimism that all parties will reach a consensus to implement it. However, the Opposition has vehemently opposed the proposal, citing constitutional concerns.

Implementing this proposal would require aligning electoral schedules with minimal disruption to governance and addressing the logistical challenges of synchronizing all states on the same timeline. There is a noticeable lack of clarity regarding the procedure in situations involving House dissolution, implementation of President's Rule, or dealing with a hung Assembly or Parliament.

Regional parties have expressed concern over their limited resources hindering their ability to bring attention to local issues amidst the noise surrounding the Lok Sabha election.
