Hezbollah declares "New Phase" of Conflict, Israel Issues "Hit Anyone" Warning
Responding to increased rocket attacks from southern Lebanon, Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel has delivered "a series of blows on Hezbollah that it could have never imagined."
Israel and Hezbollah have both vowed to escalate their cross-border assaults, ignoring international pleas for de-escalation and the avoidance of a full-scale war.
Key points on this significant development include Hezbollah's deputy chief, Naim Qassem, asserting that the group has entered "a new phase" in its conflict with Israel. Qassem issued a statement in response to Israeli airstrikes in northern Lebanon, which specifically hit Hezbollah strongholds, causing extensive destruction and a high number of casualties. Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant restated Israel's dedication to protecting the safety of its citizens living in the northern region.
He emphasized that military operations will persist until the safe return of Israel's northern communities to their residences can be guaranteed. In response to the escalating tension, Army Chief Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi affirmed that Israel will take actions against any individuals who pose a threat to its populace. The largest supporter of Israel, the United States, has called for caution. President Joe Biden underscored that an increase in military actions is not advantageous for Israel and affirmed that the United States is diligently striving to avert a wider conflict. "We will make every effort to prevent a broader conflict," stated Biden.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed comparable worries, cautioning about the potential for Lebanon to mirror the situation in Gaza. Hezbollah recently fired numerous rockets, reaching Kiryat Bialik near Haifa, causing damage and sparking concerns of increased hostilities. Israel retaliated by targeting Hezbollah bases in the southern region of Lebanon, which included an airbase and facilities used for military production.
The Israel Civil Defence Agency issued an order for schools in the northern region to close due to the ongoing exchange of gunfire. In southern areas, three individuals were reported dead as a result of Israeli strikes according to Lebanon's health ministry, while Hezbollah verified that two of their fighters lost their lives.
The Israeli military reported an incursion of more than 150 rockets, missiles, and drones into its territory from Lebanon overnight. Recent Israeli airstrikes, including an attack on the densely populated Dahiyeh neighborhood in Beirut, resulted in the death of Ibrahim Aqil, the leader of Hezbollah's elite Radwan Force. Despite mediation attempts by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah shows no signs of resolution as Hezbollah remains undeterred and prepared to confront all military possibilities.
Israel continues to target Hezbollah's military infrastructure in an effort to impede the group's expansion along the Israeli-Lebanese border. Efforts to achieve a ceasefire and facilitate the release of hostages have halted, as stated by Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, who suggests that the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah is impeding progress in stabilizing Gaza.
The United Nations has characterized the situation as approaching an impending disaster.
