India ranks 3rd in power projection in Asia

India is ranked third in power projection in Asia, closely trailing behind the United States and China, according to the Lowy Institute. Despite surpassing Japan in the rankings, India's ascent has been slower than initially anticipated. The Lowy Institute's 2024 Asia Power Index places India as the third most powerful nation in Asia, with a score of 39.1 out of 100, overtaking Japan in the process.

The Institute also identifies Australia as the fifth most powerful nation in Asia. These rankings come amidst escalating Chinese aggression in Southeast Asia and the broader Indo-Pacific region. India, the United States, Japan, and Australia have formed partnerships under multiple frameworks, such as the Quad, to counter the expansionist aggression and hegemonic designs of China.

Despite ranking first, the United States lags behind China in terms of military power in Asia, despite China's plateaued economy, according to API. India's rise to the third position in Asia, surpassing Japan, has been slower than anticipated, as highlighted in the API report. The report also notes that India has unrealized potential in extending its influence east of the Malacca Strait.

The API report indicates that India's influence falls short of its potential, indicating the possibility for further growth as a major power. Despite an increase in ranking, India's overall power score in the API has declined from 2018 to 2023. The report highlights a growth in India's diplomatic performance but points out the limited economic connectivity within the region.

"India's sparse economic ties with major Asian economies and lack of engagement in regional economic structures are expected to persist," states the API report.
