"Keep Religion and Politics Separate": Supreme Court Addresses Tirupati Laddoo Controversy

The Supreme Court emphasized the necessity of keeping religion and politics distinct while addressing the issue of complaints regarding the quality of ghee used to make laddoos at Andhra Pradesh's Tirupati temple. It was noted that there is no confirmed evidence of ghee contamination, or if the allegedly contaminated ghee was actually used in the laddoos. The court highlighted an ongoing investigation and emphasized a "false positive" testing exception.

The court criticized Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu's public remarks on this controversial matter, especially since his government had already initiated a probe following a report from a Gujarat lab in July alleging the presence of fish oil, beef tallow, and pig fat in the ghee. Upon assuming the role of Chief Minister, a Constitutional position is held... It is expected that religion be separate from politics. If an investigation had already been initiated, what was the rationale behind seeking media coverage? The laboratory report was received in July. Your statement was received in the month of September. The report lacks clarity.

A bench consisting of Justice BR Gavai and Justice KV Viswanathan expressed dissatisfaction with the comments made by the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh on September 20. These comments targeted his rival and predecessor, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, regarding the alleged presence of animal fats in Tirupati laddoo ghee.

The matter has been scheduled for Thursday afternoon, with the court cautioning the Chief Minister against making further unnecessary comments. He was advised to exercise self-control.
