Trump has been informed by US intelligence about threats from Iran to assassinate him

Trump has been informed by US intelligence about threats from Iran to assassinate him, according to his campaign. The campaign stated that the Republican presidential candidate was briefed about "real and specific threats from Iran to assassinate him in an effort to destabilize and sow chaos in the United States." The statement did not provide any further details on the claims, and it remains unclear whether the threats mentioned were new or previously known. The Iranian government has not yet responded to the request for comment, although Tehran has denied previous US allegations of meddling in American matters.

rump has communicated via X, formerly Twitter, that he is facing significant threats from Iran. He stated that although Iran's previous attempts failed, they are likely to try again. He described any attack on him as a "death wish" by the perpetrator and expressed gratitude to Congress for increasing funding for the Secret Service. Steven Cheung, the Trump campaign communications director, mentioned that intelligence officials have noted a recent surge in coordinated attacks. He emphasized the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies to safeguard President Trump and ensure the integrity of the upcoming election.

These statements follow an assassination attempt on President Trump on 13 July during a rally in Pennsylvania, resulting in injuries to him and the death of another individual. The motive for the incident has not been identified and is currently being investigated. Media reports in the United States later stated that officials had received intelligence regarding a potential Iranian plot against the former president. Iranian officials rejected the allegations as "malicious," according to a report by the BBC's US partner CBS News.

"If they 'assassinate President Trump,' which is always a possibility, I hope that America obliterates Iran, wipes it off the face of the Earth - If that does not happen, American Leaders will be considered 'gutless' cowards!" Mr. Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

On 15 September, a Secret Service agent observed a rifle protruding through a fence at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach. The agent discharged a firearm while Mr. Trump was engaged in a round of golf. US prosecutors have filed charges against Ryan Wesley Routh, an individual apprehended near the golf course, for the attempted assassination of a presidential candidate. There is no indication of Iranian involvement in either incident. Recently, the Trump campaign reported that some of its internal communications were compromised and insinuated that it was targeted by Iranian operatives. In 2022, a member of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guard Corps was indicted by the US for conspiring to kill Trump's former National Security Advisor John Bolton.

The US Department of Justice stated that Shahram Poursafi tried to offer $300,000 (£224,000) to individuals in the US to carry out the murder, as retaliation for the US strike that resulted in the death of Iranian military commander Qasem Soleimani.
