After the arrest of 35 Somali pirates: How police faced a difficult time after arresting 120 pirates in 2011

Mumbai police arrested 35 Somali pirates on Saturday for stealing a cargo ship, just days after 118 pirates were imprisoned for six years. The people of Mali returned to their country. A Mumbai native after serving seven years in the city jail for a similar incident.

In 2011, 120 Somalis were arrested in four separate operations, and the police, courts and prison authorities faced many difficulties in obtaining interpreters to communicate during the hearing, language and food in prison, and after the repatriation hearing. It's their decision.

In 2011, the Indian Navy arrested 120 people trying to steal ships in four anti-piracy operations. Two people died during the experiment. Since Huangmen Police Station has jurisdiction over maritime crimes, the man was taken to the police station. The first problem the police faced at that time was to take them to the police station and communicate with them. They cannot answer questions because they do not know English. The people in question were brought to the courthouse and the police transported them in groups with squad cars taken from other police stations. The court sent them to judicial custody after which they were sent to Taloja Central Jail. The men remained there for more than six years until they made the decision in 2018.

During prison service, men initially found it difficult to adapt to local food and communication, and to keep Hindi and Marathi out of the speech of others, after learning basic English taught by relatives at home. Lawyers also need to hire Somali students studying in the city as interpreters to explain court proceedings. Prison officials and guards also tried to take them to the other end of the court, into the courtroom, but the court could not bring them together. The court eventually decided to submit the documents via video conference.

Although the men initially claimed they were not involved in the crime, they confessed. In 2017, they were sentenced to seven years in prison in court. Most of the men were convicted of charges including kidnapping, attempted murder and certain sections of the Criminal Procedure (Protection) Act.
