Strategic message in building INS Jatayu
The new base sends a clear message to India's neighbors that the Indian Navy can protect India's vital maritime interests.
Last week, India commissioned INS Jatayu at Minikoi in Lakshadweep Islands. The event is a significant one for the Indian Navy as it aims to improve its status as the dominant security force in the Indian Ocean. Located on the main shipping lane of the Indian Ocean, Minicoy already has a naval detachment. Amid increasing piracy in the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea and Houthi attacks in the Houthi Red Crescent, the military decided to convert existing facilities into full-fledged bases. Indian security officials believe Minicoy's surveillance system will help monitor illegal activities and other non-traditional threats such as ocean pollution and illegal fishing.
