Houthi missile attack on ship off Yemen kills 3 crew members in rebels' first fatal assault
The merchant ship "True Faith" was seriously damaged by anti-ship missiles fired from the Houthi-controlled area in Yemen.
At least three crew members of a commercial ship were killed in an attack by Houthi rebels in Yemen, according to the Associated Press. Survivors were forced to abandon ship. This situation caused the Houthis to increase their attacks on the Red Sea, which started in October after the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
According to the statement made by the US Central Command, the merchant ship "True Faith" was hit by a missile fired from the region controlled by the Houthi forces in Yemen and serious damage was caused.
After the fire, the crew escaped from the ship and launched the lifeboat. A ship belonging to the US and Indian Navy is at the scene to assist in rescue efforts. The number of people on the ship at the time of the attack is not yet known.
The attack on the Barbados-flagged, Liberian-owned carrier True Confidence further increased tensions on the main sea route connecting Asia and the Middle East to Europe and also affected international rail.
According to Reuters, the Greek "True Faith" operator said that the ship sank and caught fire. Authorities stated that there was no information about the status of 20 crew members and 3 security guards, including 15 Filipinos, 4 Vietnamese, 2 Sri Lankans, 1 Indian and 1 Nepalese.
