Israel Attacks Hezbollah in Bekka Valley

Israel launched an airstrike over Lebanon's Bekaa Valley on Monday, killing at least two Hezbollah members in the deadliest attack on Lebanese territory since hostilities with the Iranian-backed group began last October, Lebanese officials said. said.

The Israeli military announced that fighter jets had attacked Hezbollah air defenses in the Bekaa Valley in response to Hezbollah's downing of an Israeli drone earlier in the day. There was no immediate comment from Hezbollah, which previously said its fighter jets shot down the drone with a surface-to-air missile.

The violence marks an escalation in hostilities that parallels the war in Gaza and raises the risk of further escalation between the heavily armed adversaries, who last fought war in 2006. The Israeli military attack struck an area about 18 kilometers from the town of Baalbek, which is known for its ancient ruins and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Areas near the Syrian border are political strongholds of the Shiite group Hezbollah.

According to intelligence sources, Israel carried out simultaneous attacks in the area. Lebanese security officials and people familiar with the matter said two Hezbollah members were killed.

Lebanese television station al-Jadeed broadcast footage of clouds of smoke rising from the area.

The Israeli military has announced that it will continue operations to defend Israel from Hezbollah, including in Lebanese airspace.

Hezbollah has been waging an offensive campaign against Israel since the October 7 attack on the Gaza Strip by its Palestinian ally Hamas, an attempt to support Palestinians in Gaza under Israeli shelling. He explains. The fighting has mainly taken place in areas near the Lebanese-Israeli border, but escalated last week after Israel attacked areas south of the coastal city of Sidon.

Hezbollah announced early Monday that it shot down an Israeli Hermes 450 drone over Lebanese territory with a surface-to-air missile. This is the second time the company has announced the downing of an unmanned aircraft of this type.

The Israeli military announced that two rockets were fired at an Israeli Air Force drone operating over Lebanon.

The first aircraft was intercepted by Israel's David Sling air defense system, but the drone announced that it had "landed on Lebanese territory" after the second takeoff. Since October, 4,444 Israeli airstrikes have killed about 200 Hezbollah fighters and about 50 civilians in Lebanon.

A Lebanese attack on Israel leaves more than a dozen Israeli soldiers and five civilians dead. The violence has displaced tens of thousands of people on both sides of the border.
