Hamas Chief Ismail Haniyeh Killed In Iran's Capital, Hamas confirms

The Palestinian group said in a statement today that Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and one of his bodyguards were killed in an attack on their residence in Iran.

Hamas said Ismail Haniyeh was killed Tuesday morning in a "traitorous Zionist attack on his residence in Tehran." The group said an investigation was underway to determine the details of the attack.

Haniyeh had been in the Iranian capital to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian.

"Our brother and mentor, Mujahid Ismail Haniyeh, leader of the movement, was killed in a Zionist attack on our headquarters in Tehran after attending the inauguration of the new (Iranian) president," the statement said.

"Our brother and mentor, the leader of our movement, Mujahid Ismail Haniya, was killed in a Zionist attack on our headquarters in Tehran after attending the inauguration of the new (Iranian) president," the statement said.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard also confirmed Haniya's death, saying his residence in Tehran was "attacked" and that he was killed along with his bodyguard.

Hamas called Haniya's killing a "serious escalation" and blamed Israel.

"This assassination of the Haniya brothers by Israeli occupation forces is a serious escalation aimed at breaking Hamas' will," said Sami Abu Zuhri, a senior Hamas official.

The Israeli military did not immediately respond to Haniya's killing.

Israel had vowed to kill Ismail Haniyeh and destroy the Hamas organization after an attack on October 7 killed 1,195 people, mostly civilians.

According to the Ministry of Health, Israeli retaliatory operations in the Gaza Strip have killed at least 39,400 people in Hamas-controlled areas.

Haniyeh was elected head of Hamas' political office in 2017, replacing Khalid Meshaal. Considered a pragmatist, Haniyeh lived in exile, dividing his time between Turkey and Qatar.

During the war, he visited Iran and Turkey on diplomatic missions and met the presidents of Turkey and Iran.

Haniyeh is said to maintain good relations with leaders of various Palestinian factions, including Hamas' rivals.

He joined Hamas in 1987 when the militant group was founded during the outbreak of the first Palestinian intifada (uprising) against Israeli occupation, which lasted until 1993.

Israel claims Hezbollah military commander, accused of 1983 US marine bombing, killed in Beirut strike

Israel in a targeted airstrike on Beirut, claims to have killed a Hezbollah military leader, accused by the USA for the 1983 bombing of US marines

The Hezbollah commander who the Israeli military says it killed in an airstrike Tuesday had been blamed by Israel for a deadly weekend rocket attack and was accused by the US of orchestrating the 1983 bombing in Beirut that killed 241 American servicemen.

A statement from Israeli military spokesperson Daniel Hagari said the target of the strike, Fouad Shukur, was behind the Saturday rocket attack on the town of Majdal Shams that killed 12 young people in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights of Syria. Hezbollah, which denied it was behind the Majdal Shams attack, didn't confirm that Shukur was the target of Tuesday's airstrike or that he was killed. If Israel's claim proves true, Shukur would be the most senior Hezbollah commander to be killed since 2016, when Mustafa Badreddine, the group's military commander in Syria, died in an explosion in the Syrian capital of Damascus.

The Israeli military said that Shukur had directed Hezbollah's attacks on Israel since October 8, after the Israel-Hamas war erupted, and that he was also involved in “the killing of numerous Israelis and foreign nationals over the years.”

It said Shukur was responsible for the majority of Hezbollah's most advanced weaponry, including guided missiles, cruise missiles, anti-ship missiles, long-range rockets and UAVs.

The 62-year-old, secretive Shukur was in charge of Hezbollah's forces in southern Lebanon along the border with Israel as well as being a top official in the group's missile program.

He was a close aide to Hezbollah's top military commander, Imad Mughniyeh, who was assassinated in a car bomb attack in Damascus in 2008. Shukr has since become a close military adviser to Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.

Melania thought the worst had happened’: Donald Trump on Pennsylvania shooting; vows to hold more outdoor rallies

Donald Trump, the Republican Presidential candidate, said Melania was “watching live” coverage when multiple shots were fired at his election rally in Pennsylvania earlier this month.

Donald Trump, the Republican Presidential candidate and former US President, on Monday revealed that his wife, Melania, was “watching live” coverage when multiple shots were fired at his election rally in Pennsylvania earlier this month.

Melania was watching the rally on television and thought, “the worst had happened,” Donald Trump said in an interview with Fox News host Laura Ingraham aired on Monday night.

“She was watching live,” he added. Donald Trump said that his wife "can’t really even talk about it, which is OK,” and “that means she likes me.” Donald Trump highlighted his wife’s immediate reaction, “When I went down, she thought the worst had happened,” suggesting his hand covered in blood as the reason for her reaction.

"Yes, I will hold rallies (outdoors)," Donald Trump said. Despite surviving an assassination attempt, the former US president insists he will continue to hold outdoor campaign rallies in the future.

The Secret Service was criticized for failing to secure the roof of the factory where gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks targeted the US presidential candidate. The gunman positioned himself on the roof of a building more than 400 feet away and fired shots, one of which grazed Donald Trump's right ear.

Days after the assassination attempt on Donald Trump, Director of Secret Service Kimberly Cheatle submitted her resignation.

Anurag Thakur confronts Rahul Gandhi over caste numbers in Parliament

"Exposing the dirty politics...": PM Modi speaks out after Anurag Thakur confronts Rahul Gandhi over caste numbers in Parliament

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has termed Anurag Thakur's speech as "a perfect combination of facts and humour exposing the dirty politics of the Indian Union".

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday praised Bharatiya Janata Party leader Anurag Thakur's speech in Parliament, where the former Union Minister delivered a political rebuttal to Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi's speech. PM Modi termed Thakur's speech as "a must listen".

Post excerpts of Anurag Thakur's speech on a microblogging site A perfect combination of facts and humour exposing the dirty politics of the INDI Union.

This speech by my young and dynamic colleague Shri @ianuragthakur is a must listen. A perfect combination of facts and humour exposing the dirty politics of the INDI alliance. https://t.co/4utsqNeJqp — Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) July 30, 2024

Anurag Thakur launched a scathing attack on Rahul Gandhi over his pursuit of "chakravyuh" against the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government the previous day, alleging that the Congress leader had misinterpreted his position as LoP as a "propaganda leader".

Thakur also asserted that the Congress' definition of OBC is "legal commission only" and not "other backward classes". He also referred to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's opposition to reservation for OBCs.

Without naming names, Thakur said some people are "accidental Hindus" and their knowledge of the Mahabharata is also accidental.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has accused Bharatiya Janata Party MP Anurag Thakur of "insulting and abusing" him. The controversy erupted after Thakur retorted that "people whose caste is unknown are talking about the census".

Indian Air Force uses S-400 system in war exercise

India's Sudarshan S-400 system "shot down" 80% of "enemies" during exercise, forcing the rest to retreat India recently tested its S-400 anti-aircraft missile system acquired from Russia in a war-like scenario and the results could not have been more satisfactory. During the Indian Air Force exercise, the Sudarshan S-400 system "shot down" 80% of the "enemies". The remaining 20% were forced to retreat and abandon the mission, news agency ANI quoted defense sources as saying. Notably, India has three squadrons of the long-range anti-aircraft missile system deployed on its borders with Pakistan and China. The latest exercise took place in a combat zone where one of the squadrons is stationed. In recent years, China has been increasing its investments in defense capabilities across the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the de facto border between India and Tibet.

In response to these developments, India has now fully integrated the Sudarshan S-400 system into its Air Force. The Indian Air Force now calls the Russian system Sudarshan after ruler Krishnamurti's powerful Sudarshan Chakra.

"Sudarshan was able to 'take aim' and 'shoot down' 80 percent of the 'enemy' attacking forces in a simulated action," a defense official was quoted as saying by ANI.

This will demonstrate the military readiness of our armed forces and at the same time send a clear message to potential aggressors.

India-Russia Deal

India and Russia have signed a $4.2 billion deal for five S-400 squadrons. The Indian Air Force will have to accept two more squadrons, due to be inducted by 2026.

New Delhi has asked Moscow to speed up the manufacturing and delivery process for the remaining two squadrons.

Additionally, India is also considering other options to strengthen its defense capabilities.

Elon Musk warns US against ‘very real’ risk after Kamala Harris' ‘shameful’ message on Venezuela election

Elon Musk warns US against ‘very real’ risk after Kamala Harris' ‘shameful’ message on Venezuela election

Elon Musk, who endorsed Donald Trump shortly after an assassination attempt on him at a rally in Pennsylvania, has warned the United States of “very real” risk if Kamala Harris becomes the country's next president. Musk, a staunch critic of the US Vice President, has revamped his attack on Harris since she announced her bid for presidency following President Joe Biden's exit from the race. The latest attack against Harris comes in the backdrop of Nicolas Maduro's presidency win in Venezuela for a third term. Meanwhile, US State Secretary Antony Blinken raised “serious concerns” of United States, stating that the Venezuelan election result declaring Maduro the winner is “not accurate.” “We have serious concerns that the result announced does not reflect the will or the votes of the Venezuelan people,” he stated in Japan.

Harris has a message for Venezuelan people

Harris faced backlash on X for posting a message, in which she said that the choice of the Venezuelans must be respected as the opposition has been pointing out anomalies since Maduro was proclaimed the winner.    "The United States stands with the Venezuelan people who made their voices heard in today's historic presidential election," she wrote.

"The will of the Venezuelan people must be respected. Despite the many challenges, we will continue to work toward a more democratic, prosperous and secure future for the Venezuelan people," she added.

Meanwhile, Tesla CEO Elon Musk shared Harris' tweet and endorsed a post by political commentator Gunther Eagleman, who wrote that "If Trump is not elected, the United States will become Venezuela."

The billionaire re-shared Eagleman's post, writing: "I believe this risk is very real."

Israeli officials have said they want to avoid a war in Lebanon in retaliation.

Israel and Hezbollah on the brink of war after rocket attack kills 12 children

Israeli officials have said they want to avoid a war in Lebanon in retaliation.

Israel has struck Hezbollah targets and threatened further retaliation for the rocket attack that killed 12 people. But Israel has also signaled it is open to a proposed ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, which could calm its explosive front with Lebanon.

A rocket explosion on the Golan Heights on Saturday killed 12 people, Israel's deadliest incident of civilian casualties since Hamas overran southern villages and military bases on October 7.

The rocket attack hit a soccer field, killing children between the ages of 10 and 16, local officials said.

Israel claims Hezbollah fired an Iranian Falak-1 missile, but the Iran-backed group said it had "nothing to do" with the incident. The rocket attack has raised fears that conflict between Israel and Hezbollah could escalate further.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced he would demand a "heavy price" from Hezbollah. He has held several meetings with his security ministers and military chiefs to decide how to proceed.

The United States condemned the missile attack and called on all parties involved to show restraint.

But Iran has warned that any new "adventure" by Israeli forces in Lebanon could lead to "unforeseen consequences".

Israel has said it cannot compromise with an enemy that has vowed to destroy it and is on the West's terrorist blacklist. But domestic pressure to release the hostages is growing, and the Israeli army, which relies on conscripts and reservists, is exhausted.

Some Israeli officials reportedly support a ceasefire in Gaza in which Hezbollah promises not to attack Israel.

Israel launched a war with Hamas after the October 7 attacks that killed 1,200 people in southern Israel and took 250 hostages in Gaza. The Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry said the death toll in Gaza had topped 39,000.

Hezbollah was much more powerful than Hamas before October 7 and has more fighter jets, missiles and drones. Officials from both countries said a war would probably be devastating for both Lebanon and Israel.

Indian warships take part in traditional naval parade to mark Russian Navy Day

Indian warships take part in traditional naval parade to mark Russian Navy Day

The parade, which takes place on the last Sunday of July, was overseen by President Vladimir Putin, Defense Minister Andrey Belousov and Navy Commander-in-Chief Alexander Moiseyev, RT reported.

More than 200 naval vessels, including those from the Indian, Chinese and Algerian navies, took part in the traditional naval parade to mark Russian Navy Day in St. Petersburg on Sunday.

President Vladimir Putin, Defense Minister Andrey Belousov and Navy Commander-in-Chief Alexander Moiseyev oversaw the parade, which takes place on the last Sunday of July, RT reported.

In his speech on the occasion, Putin vowed that Russia would continue to strengthen its naval power and modernize its fleet with high-tech resources, including hypersonic missiles. The event was attended by more than 15,000 soldiers and vessels of various ranks from Russia's Northern, Pacific, Baltic and Caspian fleets, as well as the Syrian Naval Expeditionary Force. However, the Black Sea Fleet ships were missing due to their participation in active operations in the Ukrainian conflict.

The parade is traditionally led by the Poltava, a restored 18th century 54-gun sailing ship. The original ship, launched in 1712, was named after the site of the battle in 1709 that led to Russia's devastating victory over Sweden, turning the tide of the Great Northern War and paving the way for Russia to become a world power.

Another highlight of the parade was the patrol icebreaker Ivan Papanin, specially designed for Arctic conditions. Russia currently has the world's largest icebreaker fleet with over 40 ships. Other ships in the parade included several small missile boats and corvettes, typically equipped with Kalibr cruise missiles with a range of over 1,000 km.

The submarine force was represented by the diesel-electric submarine Mozhaisk, which can be equipped with torpedoes or Kalibr missiles.

Also participating were the Chinese Navy's destroyer Jiaozuo and supply ship Honghu, the Algerian Navy's training ship La Soumam, and the Indian Navy's Russian-built stealth frigate Tabar.

Will Bangladesh's student movement turn into a revolution?

The situation in Bangladesh is considered the worst since the country was founded in 1971.

A week after the Bangladesh Supreme Court cut quotas that sparked riots in which over 200 protesting students were killed, the situation is simmering. They carry out "block raids" and arrest suspected troublemakers. The situation is considered the worst since the country was founded in 1971.

The situation is desperate. The ruling party and the government are mobilizing police, rapid response battalions and the army to crush the movement. My student, Abu Sayeed (25), fell victim to their bullets. Bangladeshi political commentator Professor Nazmul Ahsan Karimullah told TNIE that the situation remains tense as young people are being rounded up and put in cells in the name of "block raids".

Abu Sayeed's family received a compensation of Tk 950,000.

Armed police are reportedly knocking on doors in random order to find and arrest those deemed troublemakers.

"Our statistics (we have a complete list) confirm that 266 people have been killed in these protests. "We do not believe that the current government is legitimate. It has remained in power through brutal violence which has led to serious human rights violations. The opposition has also been silenced. A mere student protest will soon turn into a revolution against the government," Pinaki Bhattacharya, an exiled Bangladeshi blogger and human rights activist, told TNIE.
