British Indian student in trouble over Taliban Joke to blow up plane gets grilled by MI5 and MI 6
British university student Aditya Verma is on trial after his Snapchat messages triggered a security alert. Velma went to the Spanish island of Menorca with her friends. In a Snapchat message sent from Gatwick Airport, she humorously claimed that she had ties to the Taliban and planned to destroy the plane. The comment, apparently a joke made to a friend, provoked an immediate reaction from British security services. The incident dated back to July 2022, when the British-Indian student turned 18.
UK authorities detected Wi-Fi related messages at Gatwick Airport. They notified their Spanish counterparts when the EasyJet plane took off. The Spanish Air Force sent two F-18 fighter jets to escort the plane until it landed safely in Menorca. An extensive search was conducted but nothing unusual was found.
Verma was arrested on landing and kept in police custody for two days. He was released on bail and sent back to England. Before returning to Orpington he faced questions from British intelligence agencies MI5 and MI6. The incident occurred as Verma was preparing to start studying economics at the University of Bath.
