Indian Navy ship Sumitra foiled FV Iman's piracy attempt off the east coast of Somalia, saving the fishing boat Al Naeemi and its 19 Pakistani crew. Indian Navy ship INS Sumitra completed its second anti-piracy mission and rescued 19 crew members and a ship from pirates in Somalia in the Arabian Sea, an Indian Navy spokesman said on Tuesday. The spokesperson said on social media: The operation took place on Sunday night, when Sumitra safely rescued the Iranian fishing boat "Iman" containing 17 passengers from Somali pirates during an anti-piracy operation in the east of Somalia and the Gulf of Aden.
The Indian Navy said the warship INS Sumitra intercepted the ship and followed operational procedures designed to force the pirates to safely release the crew and make progress. Release all 17 crew members on board.
"INSSumitra, after rescuing MV Iman, had to return to search and intercepted another Iranian-flagged PV, which was boarded by pirates and the crew was arrested," the Indian Navy said in a statement on Tuesday.
INS Sumitra reacted quickly to the development by "aborting the FV and forcing the body to safely release the crew and ship on the afternoon of 29 January and sending all helicopters and ships to her."
