One killed, six injured after portion of roof collapses at Delhi airport's T-1

One person died and six were injured after a portion of the roof of the Delhi airport's Terminal-1 collapsed on cars, including taxis, amid heavy rain early Friday, leading to suspension of flight departures, according to officials.

Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu said he was monitoring the situation and the injured had been hospitalised.

Delhi Fire Services officials said three fire tenders were rushed to Terminal-1 of the airport after a call about the incident was received around 5:30 am.

Besides the roof sheet, the support beams collapsed, damaging the cars parked in the pick-up and drop area of the terminal. A search operation was conducted to make sure no one was trapped inside the damaged vehicles, they said.

The injured persons have been admitted to Medanta Hospital near the airport. Of the six injured, one person was rescued from a car on which an iron beam had fallen, they added.

Work was underway to clear the debris.   Deputy Commissioner of Police Usha Rangnani said due to heavy rains, the shed outside Terminal-1 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport , spanning from departure gate no. 1 to gate no. 2, collapsed around 5 am, damaging four vehicles.

One person died and six people were injured in the incident. All the injured are stable, she said.

Teams of Delhi Police, DFS, Central Industrial Security Force and National Disaster Response Force are present at the spot, the DCP said.

In a post on X, Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu said, "Personally monitoring the roof collapse incident at T1 Delhi Airport. First responders are working at site. Also advised the airlines to assist all affected passengers at T1."

The return of the Boeing Starliner spacecraft carrying astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore from the International Space Station (ISS) to Earth has been postponed again by NASA to allow more time to review technical issues. The spacecraft was originally scheduled to return on June 26; before that, the first possible date was June 14. Williams and Wilmore were scheduled to return home after about a week in orbit. The two astronauts were launched on June 5 as a final demonstration to receive approval from NASA for routine flights. Starliner's first manned test flight suffered five failures in its 28 control engines, including helium leaks and sluggish fuel valves.

On June 7, Indian-born US astronaut Sunita Williams broke into an impromptu dance as she entered the ISS.

She and her colleague Butch Wilmore were greeted with a welcome card that read "Ringing Bells".

Williams, 58, a manned test flight pilot, was on her third spaceflight aboard Boeing's Starliner spacecraft.

The Expedition 71 crew welcomed Williams and Wilmore to the ISS after the Starliner docked at about 11:04 pm on June 7, about 26 hours after it launched from the US's Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

"As part of @USNavy tradition for the captains boarding their ships, a bell was rung as @NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and @Astro_Suni boarded the @Space_Station," NASA posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Williams made history by becoming the first female astronaut to take part in the maiden flight of a manned spacecraft.
