SpaceX Starship explodes near the Bahamas after disintegration in orbit

SpaceX Starship explodes near the Bahamas after disintegration in orbit

On Thursday, the launch of Starship took place as part of a test mission to deploy dummy satellites into orbit, following an earlier launch attempt that resulted in an explosion nearly two months prior.

Minutes after its launch, SpaceX’s Elon Musk experienced a loss of control over Starship in space, with the engines shutting off, according to the company's live broadcast. Shortly after, various social media clips captured bright debris from the spacecraft blazing through the twilight skies above southern Florida and the Bahamas.

The Federal Aviation Administration imposed temporary ground stops at Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach, and Orlando airports due to "space launch debris" lasting until at least 8 p.m. ET, per a report from Reuters. The disintegration of Starship in orbit was visible on the SpaceX live stream, which displayed the spacecraft spinning out of control.

In a subsequent update, SpaceX stated that during the ascent phase, "the vehicle underwent a rapid unscheduled disassembly and communication was lost," and that its team "quickly initiated coordination with safety officials to execute pre-arranged emergency procedures."

We will analyze the information from today's flight test to gain a clearer insight into the underlying issues. As has always been the case, our success stems from the lessons we learn, and today’s flight will provide further insights to enhance Starship's dependability.
