'Surprised': Chief Justice of Delhi High Court and attorney react after 'cash stash' discovered at judge's home; Chairman of Rajya Sabha responds
The discovery of a significant amount of cash at the home of Justice Yashwant Varma has left legal professionals stunned and has sparked conversations in the Rajya Sabha.
On Friday, a prominent lawyer expressed his shock and concern in front of the Delhi high court regarding the alleged finding of a substantial cash sum at the residence of Justice Yashwant Varma, who was absent from court proceedings that day, as reported by news agency PTI.
This issue also reached the Rajya Sabha, where it was brought up during the session. Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar assured the assembly that a systematic discussion framework would be considered to tackle the issue, PTI reported.
As the lawyer conveyed that he and others were disturbed by the situation, Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya echoed these feelings, stating, “so does everyone. We are aware.”
Senior attorney Arun Bhardwaj addressed the bench consisting of Justice Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela, highlighting the need for measures to prevent reoccurrences of such events in the future.
“We hold the system in high regard. Every judge garners a lot of respect. We are shaken, my lords, and disheartened. Please consider undertaking some actions. I won’t elaborate on my distress, but I believe I represent the sentiments of many of my colleagues. Please implement measures to ensure such occurrences do not take place,” Bhardwaj was quoted as saying by PTI.
