Lt. Gen. Upendra Dwivedi has been appointed as the next Chief of the Army Staff. He will succeed current Indian Army General Manoj Pande. The central government announced on Tuesday evening that Lt. Gen. Upendra Dwivedi will be the next Chief of the Army Staff, replacing current General Manoj Pande. Lt. Gen. Upendra Dwivedi, who has extensive operational experience on the China-Pakistan border, is currently the Vice Chief of the Army Staff. General Manoj Pande will retire on June 30.

Last month, the government extended General Pande's term by a month, six days before his retirement on May 31.

"The government has appointed Lt. Gen. Upendra Dwivedi, currently Vice Chief of the Army Staff, as the next Chief of the Army Staff with effect from June 30 pm," the Defence Ministry announced.

Lt. Gen. Upendra Dwivedi is a recipient of the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and three GOC in C commendation cards.

As Commander Northern Command, Lt. Gen. Upendra Dwivedi provided strategic advice and operational supervision for the planning and execution of sustained operations along the northern and western borders. He also led dynamic counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir, officials told news agency PTI.

They said that during this period, Upendra Dwivedi was actively involved in ongoing negotiations with China to resolve sensitive border issues.

He was also involved in modernizing and equipping India's largest Army HQ and managed the induction of indigenous equipment as part of Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Sufficient India).

During his long and distinguished service spanning almost four decades, he held various posts including Commander, Staff Officer, Instructor and Foreign Officer. Dwivedi's command posts include Regimental Commander (18 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles), Brigade (Sector 26 Assam Rifles), Inspector General Assam Rifles (East) and 9 Corps.

Educational Background of Upendra Dwivedi Born on 1 July 1964, Dwivedi graduated from Sainik School, Rewa and commissioned into the Indian Army's 18 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles on 15 December 1984. He later commanded the unit.

Dwivedi is a graduate of the National Defence College and the Army War College.

He also completed courses at the Defence Staff College, Wellington and the Army College, Mhow.

This officer holds a Master's degree in Defence and Management Studies and two Master's degrees in Strategic Studies and Military Science.
