The intrusion took place in early December when cybercriminals infiltrated a third-party cybersecurity service provider, which managed access to unclassified documents, as stated by US officials. 

A China "state-sponsored" entity breached the workstations of the US Treasury Department and gained remote entry to several workstations alongside a variety of unclassified documents earlier this month, as reported by numerous US media organizations. 

The hackers compromised the third-party cybersecurity provider BeyondTrust, thereby managing access to the unclassified materials. US officials further noted that this breach took place in early December and became public through a letter written by the Treasury Department to legislators alerting them about the incident. 

The US agency characterized the breach as a "major incident" and mentioned its collaboration with the FBI and other investigative bodies to examine the situation. 

"The compromised BeyondTrust service has been disabled, and there is no indication that the threat actor maintains access to Treasury systems or information," a spokesperson from the department stated. 

"According to the available indicators, the incident has been linked to a China state-sponsored Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) actor," the Treasury mentioned in its correspondence to the Senate Banking Committee leadership.

Regarding future missions planned by ISRO, Somanath commented, “In 2025, we will initiate numerous missions, starting with the GSLV launching the (navigation satellite) NVS-02 in January.” In May 2023, ISRO successfully deployed a navigation satellite aboard the GSLV-F12/NVS-01 rocket. This GSLV rocket successfully positioned the NVS-01 navigation satellite, which weighs approximately 2,232 kg, into a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO).

On December 30, 2024, at exactly 9:58 PM IST, ISRO is scheduled to launch its eagerly awaited SpaDeX mission on the PSLV-C60. This initiative signifies a crucial turning point for India’s aspirations in space, highlighting the nation's inaugural demonstration of in-space docking technology featuring two small crafts. 

The SpaDeX initiative consists of two satellites, SDX01 (the Chaser) and SDX02 (the Target), which are engineered to dock within low Earth orbit. This technological achievement is essential for India's future projects, including lunar missions and the establishment of a national space station. ISRO has assured that the PSLV-C60 is in readiness, with the launch vehicle fully assembled and transported to the First Launch Pad for concluding inspections. 

The mission initiates with the deployment of the Target satellite 15 minutes following launch, soon to be followed by the Chaser. By employing precise incremental velocity modifications, the Target spacecraft will gradually separate from the Chaser by 10-20 km, creating the conditions for a series of methodical maneuvers. These maneuvers will involve systematic reductions in the distance between the satellites, culminating in docking—a milestone anticipated to take place in early January 2025. 

ISRO characterizes SpaDeX as a landmark achievement in India’s endeavors in space, enhancing competencies in spacecraft rendezvous, docking, and undocking. These technologies are crucial for servicing satellites, managing space station operations, and undertaking interplanetary missions. Shortly after pledging to "engage in battle" to uphold H-1B visas, tech magnate Elon Musk declared on Sunday that the current system utilized to attract skilled international workers to the United States is "flawed" and requires "substantial reform". Mr. Musk and Mr. Ramaswamy, both poised to join the incoming Trump administration, have shown their support for the H-1B initiative. 

In a post on X, the social media platform he owns, Musk, who migrated from South Africa under an H-1B visa himself, expressed that he has "made it very clear" that the H-1B program is "flawed" and "requires significant reform". 

His remarks came in response to a commenter asserting that the US must become a hub for the "world’s most elite talent", but that the H-1B program "isn’t the solution to achieve that". Musk suggested it could be "readily corrected" by substantially increasing the minimum salary and introducing an annual fee for maintaining the H-1B, effectively making it "significantly more costly to recruit from abroad than from within the country". 

Just last week, Musk stated that attracting top engineering talent from overseas is "crucial for America to continue succeeding." 

Likewise, Ramaswamy, whose parents are Indian immigrants, echoed Musk’s perspective. He contended that American culture has traditionally prioritized "mediocrity over greatness".

Dispute Regarding H-1B Visas 

The H-1B visa discourse was sparked following criticism from right-wing influencer Laura Loomer of Donald Trump’s appointment of Indian-American entrepreneur Sriram Krishnan as an advisor on artificial intelligence policy in his forthcoming administration. 

Loomer, along with extreme right figures such as Ann Coulter and former Congressman Matt Gaetz, accused Musk and Ramaswamy of weakening the position of American workers. 

A widely shared post on X labeled Krishnan as an "India First" agent whose mission was to "displace American laborers." 

"Anticipating the inevitable split between President Trump and Big Tech," Loomer, known for her conspiracy theories and MAGA affiliation, stated. 

"It is imperative to safeguard President Trump from the technocrats," she added.

In Khost city, the provincial capital, hundreds of Afghans protested against Pakistan on Saturday, demanding accountability for the loss of civilian lives.

Protester Najibullah Zaland emphasized their demand for international economic pressure on Pakistan to avert such occurrences.

"We assembled here today to amplify our voices to the world," he remarked to AFP.

"A strategy for peace needs to be established, otherwise, the youth will not remain silent."

The protesters lauded the Afghan forces, with one demonstrator, Rashidullah Hamdard, asserting, "Our fighters provided a strong response, and we stand with our forces."

Hamdard added, "We urge the global community to hold the Pakistani military accountable for these brutal and reckless assaults."
