New Orleans Incident: New Year’s Day Assault Claims 15 Lives, Attacker Possibly Associated with ISIS – Here’s What We Know So Far

The individual suspected of the crime, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, was shot and killed by police following the incident. Officials suspect he might have had accomplices.

A tragic event took place in the French Quarter of New Orleans on New Year’s Day, leaving both the city and the country in shock. A U.S. Army veteran, who displayed an ISIS flag on his truck, drove into a busy pedestrian area, resulting in the deaths of 15 individuals and injuries to 30 more. The suspect, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, was killed in a gunfight with law enforcement after the event took place. Investigators think he might have had partners in this crime.

The incident happened at approximately 3:15 a.m. at the crossroads of Canal and Bourbon Streets, a well-known landmark for entertainment and music. The attack interrupted New Year’s celebrations and led to the postponement of the Sugar Bowl, an important college football game. Authorities are probing potential connections to terrorist groups, and the city remains on high alert while they look for evidence and any potential accomplices.

Here’s what is currently known about the situation:

The accused, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, was a 42-year-old U.S. citizen and Army veteran hailing from Texas who had served in Afghanistan. He was a former staff sergeant who dedicated a decade to the military, including a deployment in Afghanistan between 2009 and 2010. Jabbar subsequently moved to the Army Reserve, serving until 2020.

Jabbar met his end during a clash with police after he drove his truck into a crowd. He opened fire during the encounter, injuring two officers before he was killed.

The assault resulted in the deaths of 15 individuals from various backgrounds. Among the victims were a mother of a 4-year-old who had recently received a job promotion, a financial worker from New York who was visiting home for the holidays, and an 18-year-old nursing hopeful from Mississippi.

An ISIS flag was found on the vehicle, which heightened suspicions of ties to terrorist organizations. This development prompted federal authorities to investigate Jabbar’s possible connections to ISIS and other extremist factions.

Firearms and a potential explosive device were located inside the truck. Moreover, two explosive devices were discovered and safely diffused in the French Quarter, raising alarms about further dangers.
